Martin Crowe Vows To Hit Cancer For Six | Stuff.co.nz

Martin Crowe says he is going to beat cancer.

The former New Zealand cricket captain, who turned 50 last month, was diagnosed with lymphoma last week.

Sports commentator and close friend, Keith Quinn, said Crowe was dealing with the shock news with the same attitude he displayed as a batsman.

"He is handling it with the kind of stoic determination he showed as one of our greatest sportsmen," Quinn said.

"He told me over the phone and that was one thing that came through - his determination."

Another friend, former rugby player Grant Fox agreed, saying Crowe was a highly competitive person and had what it took to beat cancer.

"He's positive. He knows he's got something he wants to fight and he's confident he's going to beat it," he said.

In the same way he would school up on a competitor on the sports field, Fox said Crowe was now doing the same with cancer.

"He's doing his homework on lymphoma, with the medical people that have diagnosed him and are going to be treating him.

"He's finding out what it will take to win."

Professor Peter Browett, the Medical Director at NZ Leukemia and Blood Cancer, said there is a high survival rate with lymphoma.

"Lymphoma is very responsive to therapy and, in many cases, it will induce a remission, which means the cancer in the lymp nodes is resolved," he said.

"Many of those patients will have long-term remissions."

Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer in New Zealand, with around 900 people diagnosed with it every year. There are 30 types.

It arises in the cells of the lymph nodes, which commonly present in the neck or under the arms.

"But these cells can be in the skin, bone, lungs and brain, which is why it can be difficult to diagnose in an unusual site," Browett said.

He said while all cancers are serious and carry significant risks, lymphoma was more responsive to treatment.
