Bethlehem church cleaning turns into dust-up between rival monks

The annual cleaning of one of Christianity's holiest churches sparked a brawl between rival clergy on Wednesday, as dozens of monks feuding over sacred space at the Church of the Nativity battled each other with brooms until police intervened.

The ancient church, built over the traditional site of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, is shared by three Christian denominations ? Roman Catholics, Armenians and Greek Orthodox. Wednesday's fight involved Greek and Armenian clergy, with each side accusing the other of encroaching on parts of the church to which it lays claim.

The monks were tidying up the church ahead of Orthodox Christmas celebrations in early January, following celebrations by Western Christians on 25 December. The fight erupted between monks along the border of their respective areas. Some shouted and hurled brooms.

Palestinian security forces rushed in to break up the melee, and no serious injuries were reported. A Palestinian police spokesman would not immediately comment.

A fragile status quo governs relations among the denominations at the ancient church, and to repair or clean a part of the structure is to own it, according to accepted practice. That means that letting other sects clean part of the church could allow one to gain ground at another's expense. Similar fights have taken place during the same late-December cleaning effort in the past.

Tensions between rival clergy at the church have been a fact of life there for centuries and have often been caught up in international politics.

In the 1800s, friction between the denominations at the church ? each backed by foreign powers ? became so fraught that Russian Czar Nicholas I deployed troops along the Danube to threaten a Turkish sultan who had been favouring the Catholics over the Orthodox.

Those disagreements threaten the integrity of the church itself, which was originally built 1,500 years ago and parts of which have fallen into disrepair. Although the roof has needed urgent work for decades, and leaking rainwater has ruined much of the priceless artwork inside, a renovation has been delayed all these years by disagreements among the denominations over who would pay.

Only recently, the Palestinian Authority brokered an agreement to move ahead with replacing the roof, and officials hope work will begin in 2012.

Gunman opens fire outside Chinese Consulate in LA

Gunshots were fired at the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles on Thursday by a man identified by a security guard as a protester.

Police said a suspect had been taken into custody.

A group demonstrating against human rights abuses in China had gathered outside the consulate earlier Thursday. One protester argued with a security guard after the guard allegedly took a sign and threw it in the trash, The Associated Press reported. The protester later got into a vehicle and allegedly opened fire.

The Los Angeles Times reported that nine shots were fired at a security guard at about 2:15 p.m. (5:15 p.m. ET) Several bullets hit the building.

The suspect, whose name wasn't released, turned himself in about three hours later.

Police spokesman Gregory Baek said multiple rounds were fired but confirmed that no one was injured.

'I hit the ground'
A consulate security officer, Cipriano Gutierrez, 53, said he was in his guard hut outside the building when he heard shots ring out, at first mistaking them for firecrackers.

"Then the reality kicked in. There was a gunshot at me, directed towards me, so I hit the ground," Gutierrez told reporters at the scene.

"I was dodging bullets. I saw a hollow-point bullet land right next to my knee cap," he said, adding that some of the rounds pierced metal fencing in front of the consulate.

"I was grabbing the phone books trying to cover my head," he said.

The shots were fired at the consulate itself as well as at the security kiosk, Gutierrez said.

He described the gunman as a protester whom he had seen outside the consulate hours earlier.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said the Consulate General in Los Angeles has made representations to the United States, and has called for security to be stepped up at the Chinese embassies and consulates in the country.

"China attaches great importance to this matter and has urged the United States to solve this case as soon as possible and to take effective measures to protect the Chinese embassies and consulates in the United States, institutions and personnel safety," Liu said in a statement on Friday.

Police initially said they were looking for an Asian man about 65 years old with white hair.

Baek said an Asian man had turned himself in to authorities more than three hours after the incident and was in custody. It was not immediately clear if the man described by the security guard and the suspect taken into custody were the same person.

A representative from the consulate could not immediately be reached for comment.

Giftiki Takes Social Gifting Platform Mobile With iOS App

giftCollaborative gifting startup Giftiki is launching its first mobile presence with a new iPhone App. Giftiki lets users send small amounts of money as gifts, allowing recipients join a pool in order to give their friends the perfect gift. And Giftiki leverages social ties and game mechanics to get users to contribute to the gifting process and add more money to the pool. Real-World Evidence Showing that Unemployment Insurance ...

I?ve written before about the perverse impact of the unemployment insurance program, and I?ve even cited how left-wing economists such as Paul Krugman and Larry Summers admit that you get more joblessness when you pay people for not working.

I?ve even shared a very good cartoon making the same point. And who can forget Nancy Pelosi?s mindless comments about unemployment benefits being a great way to stimulate job creation.

But sometimes it helps to have real-world anecdotes, and this letter-to-the-editor from a newspaper in Ohio is very educational. Here are key excerpts.

Little did I know that attempting to hire the employees needed, which I had thought to be the easiest part, would turn out to be a nightmare if not impossible. ?Before 2009 if our company advertised for an open position, on average we would get 20 to 30 applications, interview six to eight of the applicants, and hire one or two, based on the quality and potential of the candidates. This process has been deteriorating dramatically since 2009 and now at the end of 2011 it has completely hit bottom. Of all the applications that we have received this year, when asked why they were seeking a job with us, one out of three answered: my unemployment is running out and I have to go back to work. Earlier this year after I hired two new full-time employees, went through our company?s orientation process, fitted them with our work clothing and booked them to start within a week, they both quit. One called ahead of the start date to apologize but wanted to inform us he would not be coming in because the government had just extended unemployment benefits again. The second one just did not show on his first day and when I called him he said he couldn?t come in now because unemployment had been extended and he was making almost as much as we were planning to start him out with.? ?Our government is considering extending unemployment benefits again soon. The final absurdity might be that extending unemployment is the only thing that both the Democratic and Republican majorities both agree on.

By the way, here?s a post with a similar real-world story from Detroit.

(AP) ? Police in Aspen say Charlie Sheen's ex-wife, Brooke Mueller, has been arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and cocaine possession with intent to distribute.

Authorities say officers arrested Mueller early Saturday at a nightclub after a woman reported being assaulted by her.

Mueller posted $11,000 bond and was released from custody. She's scheduled in court Dec. 19. Aspen police spokeswoman Blair Weyer says additional details are not immediately available.

Her attorney, Yale Galanter, had no comment.

Sheen and Mueller divorced earlier this year, citing Christmas Day 2009 as the day of their breakup. Charlie Sheen was arrested in Aspen on that day on suspicion of assaulting Mueller. He completed his probation in that case last November.

Siri's Abortion Stance, and 4 Other 'Insensitive' Technologies (Mashable)

When it was discovered that the new voice assistant on the iPhone 4S, Siri, didn't identify nearby abortion clinics when asked, it created a firestorm of controversy. After the story circulated widely (with even the NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation chiming in on the issue), Apple spoke out, saying that the omission was completely unintentional and that it would be amended in a future update. It's far from the first time technology has displayed inadvertent insensitivity to social issues or politics. Gadgets, software, and equipment are only as perfect as the humans who made them, after all, and if history is any indication, that's pretty imperfect.

[More from Mashable: Siri Hack Opens Your Car Door and Starts the Engine [VIDEO]]

From webcams that don't recognize people with a certain skin tone to video technologies that make certain people sick, technology sometimes stumbles upon politically incorrect landmines in its at-times clumsy march toward the uncharted future. Engineers can't predict every possible use of a piece of software or hardware, and sometimes feelings are hurt in what they exclude, typically not by design.

Siri accidentally wading into the abortion debate is just the latest chapter in this saga. It won't be the last.

Do you know of a case of technology inadvertently behaving badly that we missed? Let us know in the comments.

UN warns of possible new recession (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The United Nations has sharply cut its economic projections for global growth and says that the world is at risk for a new recession.

The U.N.'s report on the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2012, released on Thursday, forecasts 2.6 percent growth next year in its main, relatively optimistic scenario ? and just 0.5 percent growth in its pessimistic scenario.

That's significantly below its May forecast that the global economy would grow 3.6 percent in 2012.

Following two year of anemic and uneven recovery from the global financial crisis, the report said, "the world economy is teetering on the brink of another major downturn" and "the risks for a double-dip recession have heightened."

PhotoKey 4

Editor's Note: This product has not yet been tested. The following coverage is based on information provided by the manufacturer or developer.

PhotoKey 4's main boast seems to be its ability to remove green-screen backgrounds, something other more-rounded products such as Apple Aperture 3, Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, or Corel PaintShop Pro X4 can handle. But PhotoKey can also handle other digital photo enhancing tasks, such as lighting, and color. The program can add limited effects in multiple layers, too, inlcuding blur and transparency. For more effects, you'll have to spring for the PhotoKey 4 Pro level, which costs $239.

PhotoKey's emphasis on green-screen, or "keying" means it comes with more controls over how to implement the effects, including detail, softness, erode, alpha levels, spill suppression, and light wrap. This is all fine, but what's most important is that the program can automatically remove your green screen background, as Adobe PhotoShop Elements and Apple Aperture can. It's far preferable to have the background correctly removed than to have to tinker with lots of controls.

Beyond the features already mentioned, PhotoKey can add text titles, change an images canvas size and shape. You can draw freehand masks instead of using a green screen. It can import and export JPEG, PNG and TIFF image formats of up to 25 megapixels. Versions for Windows and Mac OS X are available.?
