Kentucky State Parks Begins Energy Retrofit of Nine Western Kentucky Parks

Kentucky?s state parks system is Get bestledlightbulbs1, including popular patio lights and outdoor light fixtures.two months into a major energy savings project at nine of its parks. The project is part of Governor Steve Beshear?s Initiative for Smart Government, which is designed to reduce government waste.

Kentucky State Parks began its energy savings initiative by focusing on energy consumption in nine of the resort parks in Western Kentucky. Commissioner Elaine Walker says the improvements run the gamut,The best Hi Power divingflashlight2012 on the market, with magazine tests to prove it, from replacing inefficient light bulbs to installing low-flow toilets and showers to using solar panel to heat swimming pools.

?So it?s a broad scope of a project, but we?re very excited about it because not only will it reduce our energy footprint, but ultimately it will save the parks and the taxpayers money,? she said.

Walker says by the time the nine initial parks are finished, reduced carbon dioxide emissions will be the equivalent of removing 1,400 cars from the road a year.

?And so that?s a pretty substantial part of Parks footprint that we?re going to address,? she said. ?So not only are we going to be breathing cleaner air,LC LED provides eco-friendly energy efficient goodledstriplight. we?re going to be using less energy and saving money in the long run.?

The energy upgrades to these first nine parks will cost about $10.4 million. The contractor has estimated energy savings of at least $1 million dollars a year, but Walker says she thinks the actual savings will be even greater.

Soon enough,A reliable ledbright will help keep you safe and on track whether you're riding home from work. the people, too, were enjoying the bitter drink the tree produced, with many ascribing to it divine properties. It was used during sacred ceremonies, while the plant's beans soon became a popular form of currency.

After several thousand years, European explorers discovered the drink, but found it too bitter for their liking. However, in the early 16th century, Hernando Cortez, who had previously described the concoction as a "bitter drink for pigs," discovered that its harsh taste could be tamed with a little - or a lot of - sugar.

Europeans soon took to this sweetened form of the drink,Bicygnals wireless indicator r4onsale, bicycle lights, indicators, accessories ... and they discovered that the plant's beans, properly sweetened, could also be used to make irresistible food. And then in 1753, legendary Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus gave it its scientific name, the name by which we still know it today: Theo-broma, meaning, literally, the "food of the gods." More specifically, the tree was called theobroma cacao. And the letters of that second word offer a broad hint what the fuss is all about: Cocoa, or chocolate, a food and drink that many of us consider divine, even if we no longer believe that it was literally delivered to us by the gods.

And now medical science is finding that chocolate's effects are worthy of conferring on it divine status. It's been known for some time, for example, that cocoa and dark chocolate are extremely high in antioxidants, far higher than most fruits and vegetables.

These antioxidants, along with anti-inflammatory properties, suggest that dark chocolate is important for heart health, and scientific studies have found that it can apparently reduce bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol, reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow.

FACT CHECK: Oil stats belie tough enforcement talk

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In the three years since President Barack Obama took office, Republicans have made the Environmental Protection Agency a lightning rod for complaints that his administration has been too tough oil and gas producers.

But an Associated Press analysis of enforcement data over the past decade finds that's not the case. In fact, the EPA went after producers more often in the years of Republican President George W. Bush, a former Texas oilman, than under Obama.

Also, the agency's enforcement actions have declined overall since 2002 and reached their lowest point last year, the review found.

Accusations of EPA overzealousness peaked in April. That's when a regional administrator resigned after a two-year-old video surfaced in which he compared enforcement of oil and gas regulations with how the Romans used to conquer villages, by finding "the first five guys they saw and they'd crucify them." GOP critics publicized the video of Al Armendariz, who headed the region that includes Texas and other major oil- and gas-producing states, as an example of what was wrong with an agency that Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney calls "completely out of control."

"We have a genuine concern that his comments reflect the agency's overall enforcement philosophy," six Republican congressmen from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana said in a joint statement the day Armendariz stepped down.

Romney has expressed distaste for the EPA's tactics. The agency, he said late last year, "is a tool in the hands of the president to crush the private enterprise system, to crush our ability to ? to have energy, whether it's oil, gas, coal, nuclear."

Actually, the U.S. produced more oil in 2010 than it has since 2003, and all forms of energy production have increased under Obama, but he can't take credit for all of it.

Armendariz's territory, which also includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma, has more oil and gas wells than any of EPA's nine other regions. But the number of enforcement cases against companies working those wells has been lower every year under Obama than any year under Bush.

That trend extends to the rest of the country, where the number of enforcement actions against oil and gas producers dropped by 61 percent over the past decade, from 224 in 2002 to 87 last year. The decline came despite an increase in the number of producing wells and despite the EPA's listing of energy extraction as an enforcement priority under Obama. So far this year, the administration has filed 51 formal enforcement cases against energy producers.

While there has been an uptick in the average fine against companies producing oil and gas since 2007, when the penalty reached a low in the decade evaluated by the AP, the average is still lower than during some years under Bush, who was viewed as sympathetic to the oil and gas industry.

The year 2011 was an exception; the average soared due to a $20.5 million fine against a BP subsidiary in Alaska. That was the largest penalty against an oil and gas producer under Obama, but it was for a pipeline spill that happened five years earlier.

States usually take the lead on oil and gas enforcement, and federal regulations make clear that is preferred. The EPA's role is mostly limited to ensuring that state rules are in line with federal regulations designed to protect drinking water, waterways and the air.

EPA officials said the lower enforcement numbers reflect a strategy that focuses on the violations that pose the most significant risks to human health and the environment. Many of those occur not at well sites, but at other points in the oil and gas process, such as collection sites and refineries.

The agency, struggling with constant budget cuts in recent years, also doesn't have the manpower to police all the wells nationwide. The states often have more inspectors on the ground than does the federal government.

In Texas, for example, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has 500 inspectors, all of whom do some work with the state's nearly 400,000 oil and gas wells. The Texas Railroad Commission, the agency that oversees drilling, has 153 inspectors. The EPA in all of Region 6 has two oil and gas inspectors.

EPA critics say the problem is bigger than enforcement. They point to regulations that they say hamper oil and gas production and raise refining costs, while giving an advantage to renewable fuels.

"It is this whole mentality that this administration continues to have as they try to pick winners and losers in the marketplace, as they force consumers off oil and gas," said Charles Drevna, president of the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, a trade group that represents the refineries and chemical plants that process oil and natural gas.

In articles, Drevna has written that "resignation or not, Obama and the EPA are determined to pursue policies that Armendariz so accurately described."

Critics also say that the data only tell part of the story, since it doesn't include violation notices or emergency orders ? such as the one that Armendariz issued in 2010 to Range Resources to stop contaminating a drinking water well and to supply residents with clean water within 48 hours.

The order was later withdrawn after a state court ruled that the evidence linking the company's hydraulic fracturing to the well's contamination had been falsified.

Product Liability - Restore Legal Rights to Victims of Generic Drug ...

May 29, 2012

A group representing state Attorneys General across the country has backed a proposed Senate bill that would allow the makers of generic prescription drugs to update safety labels on their products if they become aware of new dangers and side effects from taking them.

According to a statement from the National Association of Attorneys General NAAG, the bill proposed by Senators Patrick Leahy and Al Franken would give all users of prescription drugs the same legal rights if they suffer a side effect from taking it that?s not expressly noted on safety information included with the drug. Under current federal law, makers of generic drugs are blocked from updating the safety labels on the copies of name-brand drugs they manufacture and distribute until the company that makes the name-brand drug makes changes. If a patient is prescribed or dispensed a generic drug and suffers a side effect, they are unable to file any legal actions against the makers of the generic drug, which is exempted from facing lawsuits for hiding side effects of that drug.

This law gained attention when the Supreme Court was presented with the case PLIVA Inc. vs. Mensing in which the high court ruled that federal law only granting permission to makers of name-brand drugs to independently update the safety labels on drugs prevented those who?ve been injured by generic prescription drugs from seeking any legal actions against the makers of it.

NAAG states that more than 70 percent of all prescriptions filled in the U.S. are for generic drugs and that?s likely to increase as patents for top-selling drugs expire, as the one for the cholesterol drug Plavix has recently done. In that case, seven companies have been permitted to make copies of Plavix to be sold under its generic name.

Analysis: Indian rupee slump costly for $5.5 billion in convertible bonds

MUMBAI (Reuters) - When promising tech company Subex sold $180 million in five-year convertible bonds in March 2007 to fund the acquisition of a Canadian technology company, India was at the height of an unprecedented market boom.

The economy was growing at more than 9 percent a year, the Indian rupee was rallying towards a record high against the dollar and the Bombay Stock Exchange's main index <.bsesn> had surged six-fold in the previous five years, even trumping the performance of China's much vaunted Shanghai stocks.

Today, India and Subex face a different reality altogether. The stock market has dropped by a fifth from the end of 2007 and the rupee in recent weeks has hit successive record lows - a costly combination for Indian companies which together face foreign currency convertible bond redemptions this year of nearly $5.5 billion.

"There will be some casualties," said Jacques Berghmans, a Brussels-based India convertibles manager with TreeTop Asset Management, which looks after about 1 billion euros in assets. "Some of the companies are already over-leveraged and they will find it tough raising fresh funding in this market," he said.

Investor fear about the fate of the euro zone is the latest factor to have hit confidence in India, undermining the currency.

But investors have raised a number of India-specific red flags to explain why the rupee is the biggest losing currency this year in Asia among those monitored daily by Reuters, including a swelling current account, heavy government spending particularly on subsidies such as oil, a rash of unpredictable regulations and tax and a coalition that is struggling to push through any reforms to bolster an economy now growing at just above 6 percent.

The slide in the stock market meant the conversion prices for many of the convertible bonds was much higher than the market price of the issuer.

The dollars to pay off investors are also much more expensive. The rupee has dropped some 30 percent from its record high to its record low.

Fitch Ratings predicted in a report in February that about half of the 55 companies with maturing foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) in 2012 were at risk of some type of restructuring or default.

In addition, with the government stuck in policy paralysis ahead of national general elections that must be held by 2014, overseas lenders could become more wary in general of Indian companies, which raised $30 billion in external commercial borrowings in 2011.

THE SUBEX EXPERIENCE

The combination of economic factors dragging on India, in particular a fiscal deficit estimated at almost 6 percent of GDP for the year to March 2012, has already prompted Standard & Poor's ratings agency to downgrade the outlook for India's credit rating, which stands just one notch above junk status.

A cut in the rating would raise borrowing costs across the board, adding to the premium lenders would demand from companies such as Subex in return for their capital.

It would also raise further doubts about India's position in the so-called BRICS of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, a grouping that represents the emerging markets challenging the world order so long dominated by North America and Europe. As India's credit rating is under pressure for a downgrade, rival Indonesia is on the up. Many see it as the new ?I' in BRICS.

Subex is a typical example of the problems many Indian companies face, said analysts, bondholders and executives of companies with overseas holdings.

Started as a provider of software products and services to global telecom companies, it faced a promising future in 2007. More recently, it has suffered from cutthroat competition and sluggish spending on technology in the wake of the global financial crisis.

After selling $180 million in five-year convertible bonds in 2007 it sold close to $100 million in three-year convertible notes in 2009, a year when the stock market rose a stunning 81 percent. Conversion, which seemed a reasonable prospect when the bonds were sold, is out of the question.

After some changes, the conversion price for the 2007 tranche was set at 136.04 rupees and for the 2009 tranche at 80 rupees. Subex stock closed on Friday at 24.60 rupees.

"FCCBs are usually a product of bull markets. People expected prices would go further up, and they set very high conversion prices," said Deep Mukherjee, a Fitch Ratings analyst in Mumbai.

In its February study, Fitch said Subex and six other companies were likely to restructure their convertible bonds with "significant distressed debt exchange" features.

Subex faces a deadline of July 9 to pay its debt, although it has reduced the outstanding amount to $94 million after redeeming some of the debt. The company is trying to convince investors to accept new 5-year notes in exchange for the existing ones. Subex did not respond to requests for comment.

Wind turbine maker Suzlon Ltd , with net debt of $2 billion that is three times its market value, is negotiating with bondholders to seek up to 45 more days to repay $360 million in FCCBs maturing in June, the company said this month.

The conversion price of 97.26 rupees a share is way above its stock price, which last traded at 20.45 rupees. Part of Suzlon's strategy is to raise up to $300 million in loans to pay the bondholders next month.

'SHEDDING TEARS'

Bigger and healthier firms such as Tata Motors and JSW Steel either have a combination of enough cash and assets on their balance sheets or access to domestic funding from bankers to avoid major problems.

Tata Steel has $473 million in FCCBs falling due this year, and JSW Steel $274 million.

For many executives the turn of fortune for India in the past few years has been a hard lesson. Smaller and medium-sized Indian firms now face a much tougher lending landscape.

"When we issued it, free money was available and I think no one expected that one will have to repay that amount," said Hiranya Ashar, chief financial officer of mid-sized IT services provider Rolta India .

"Everyone's expectation was growth is happening at 20 to 25 percent and if growth is happening then stock prices will also go up and eventually these FCCBs will get converted."

Rolta, which this month posted a drop in profit for the third quarter in a row, has raised $135 million from a clutch of Indian banks to redeem bonds maturing next month. It has to repay as the conversion price is five times the current market price.

"It was not easy to get the refinance done. All the lenders are very selectively giving refinance facilities ... our leverage levels are not very high as compared to maybe some other companies who are stretched," Ashar said.

Analysts say top quality Indian companies will still be able to raise funds from international investors. But smaller and medium sized companies that in previous years banked on a non-stop rising share prices, now face being shut out of markets, especially since many lenders are under pressure from regulators to boost capital ratios and lower their risks.

"Now, I don't want to touch 90 percent of Indian convertible bonds. It is very dangerous," said Berghmans, who holds bonds of Educomp Solutions and Rolta India among others.

However, bond investors can't cry foul, analysts say. Many were swept up into buying into India's seemingly unlimited potential without conducting the necessary financial due diligence.

"The risk is hitting them at a bad time, but should anybody shed any tears for these investors?" Fitch's Mukherjee said.

Dewey files for Chapter 11 in record law firm collapse

NEW YORK/BANGALORE (Reuters) - The crippled law firm Dewey & Leboeuf LLP filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday night and will seek approval to liquidate its business after failing to find a merger partner, marking the biggest collapse of a law firm in U.S. history.

Once one of the largest law firms in the U.S., Dewey has been hit by the loss of the vast majority of its roughly 300 partners to other firms amid concerns about compensation and a heavy debt load.

Dewey had warned employees earlier this month of the possibility the firm may shut down, and a person familiar with the matter had told Reuters that the firm was considering a bankruptcy filing.

"Dewey's failure is rocking the industry in the sense that most firms are saying to themselves, if Dewey could go down, could we?" Kent Zimmermann, a legal consultant at the Zeughauser Group, said in an email Monday night.

Dewey said in a filing it had decided to wind down its business following unsuccessful negotiations with other law firms to strike a deal. It said it would ask about 90 employees to remain on staff to assist in the liquidation, which it expects to be completed in the next few months.

Negative economic conditions, along with the firm's partnership compensation arrangements, created a situation where its cash flow was insufficient to cover capital expenses and full compensation expectations, Dewey said.

"During the first quarter of 2012, the firm was confronted with liquidity constraints that led to the precipitous resignation of over 160 of the firm's 300 partners by May 11," the New-York based firm said.

Dewey listed liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million, according to the filing. It had already terminated 433 of its 533 New York employees earlier this month, according to the state's labor department.

MONTHS OF TURBULENCE

The firm's collapse is expected to be the subject of years of court proceedings, and a number of former partners have already retained lawyers to represent them.

Monday's filing follows months of turbulence, as wave after wave of partner defections shattered the high-profile firm from within. In April, the Manhattan District Attorney's office launched a criminal probe of former firm chairman Steven Davis. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The result of a 2007 merger between Dewey Ballantine and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Green & MacRae, Dewey & LeBoeuf had about 1,450 attorneys at its peak, according to The National Law Journal.

But the firm was eventually undone by a combination of the economic downturn, excessive compensation and governance problems, according to former partners and others in the industry. In particular, Dewey's management promised millions in packages to about 100 partners, according to the court filing, leaving it strapped for cash when revenues fell during the recession.

Dewey has retained Joff Mitchell of Zolfo Cooper LLC as Chief Restructuring Officer and Albert Togut of Togut Segal & Segal LLP as bankruptcy counsel.

"The full extent of the partner compensation arrangements is subject of continuing investigation," Mitchell said in the filing.

Dewey is one of a handful of major law firms to declare bankruptcy since the recession that began in 2007. They include Coudert Brothers, Heller Ehrman and Howrey.

PENSION PLANS

As of the petition date, Dewey's assets consisted of about $13 million in cash, accounts receivable of about $255 million, various pieces of artwork, and about $11 million invested in an insurance consortium, among other potential claims, according to the filing.

In the interim, Dewey said the firm will be operating on a budget to be determined by the court. The firm has petitioned the court for permission to continue to pay salaries, benefits and paid time-off for current employees.

Dewey said that the 401(k) plans and qualified pension plans of its current and former employees and partners are held in trust and cannot be accessed by the firm's creditors.

The U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation filed suit this month to take control of three of the firm's pension plans, which the agency said were underfunded by $80 million.

The London and Paris offices of the firm are operated through a separately incorporated UK entity, which was placed into administration on Monday.

Administration is a UK legal process under court supervision, broadly similar to Chapter 11. The UK partnership is following broadly the same approach as that of Dewey in the United States, the firm said.

The firm had two dozen offices worldwide, including in Washington, Los Angeles and London. Some of the firm's biggest clients included General Motors Corp, eBay, Novartis, Ambac and Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Division.

The case is Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP, Case No. 12-12321, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).

Samsung Prepping Galaxy S III Pop-Up Stores in London

Samsung Pop-Up Store

Samsung announced today that it will launch several pop-up stores in London in order to showcase its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III.

The first two stores, dubbed Samsung Mobile PINs, will open at Westfield Shepherd's Bush and at Old Spitalfields Market on May 29 - the day the Galaxy S III makes its European debut. Over the summer, two more PINs will launch in Hyde Park and within the Olympic Park.

"As the name PIN suggests, the conceptual idea is a moving landmark experience like a pinpoint on a map," Samsung said in a blog post.

Shoppers will get to try out the new Galaxy S III smartphone, as well as other Samsung devices and apps. "We welcome everyone to this dynamic and energetic place to fully experience and enjoy all the core features of Samsung mobile products," Younghee Lee, senior vice president and head of global marketing for Samsung Mobile, said in a statement.

Samsung said its Mobile PIN stores will be glass structures "specially engineered to capture the imagination, whilst being mobile enough to easily change location. One of the more prominent characteristics of the PIN is its wall, built with a two-way customized mirrored glass."

The announcement comes several weeks after Samsung and Visa teamed up for a limited-edition Galaxy S III that will be available to athletes and trialists competing in this summer's Olympic games.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S III during a London press event earlier this month. It boasts a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED 1,280-by-720 display, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facing one.

The device is expected to hit the U.S. market sometime this summer, though carriers and release dates have not yet been announced. Those eager to get their hands on one, however, can pre-order an unlocked version of the Galaxy S III - for a hefty $800 price tag.

PhishGuru

Businesses can use PhishGuru (from $10 per user for a 25-person annual license; volume discounts apply), a software-as-a-service offering from Wombat Security Technologies, to train their employees to recognize malicious emails that arrive in their inbox. Malicious emails with booby-trapped attachments or links to suspicious websites flood user inboxes daily. While businesses are investing in spam filters and advanced scanning tools to prevent these messages? from showing up in the inbox in the first place, it's also important that regular users be alert and recognize the malicious few that still make it through. After all, just one user opening a loaded Word document can compromise the entire company.

Security experts emphasize the importance of user awareness training, but they also acknowledge that the common classroom-style of telling users what they shouldn't do is not very effective. This is where PhishGuru's simulations make a difference. The service sends out mail specially crafted to mimic the kind of malicious messages employees are likely to see on a daily basis. If the employee falls for the trick and clicks on the link or opens the attachment, the service displays a message explaining that it wasn't a legitimate message and identifies the suspicious elements that should have given away that message was a phishing attack. Wombat meets the security needs for a small business by offering relevant phishing simulations on an affordable and easy-to-use platform, making PhishGuru our Editors? Choice in antiphishing products.

While employees are getting real-time training, administrators can also monitor the overall performance and test effectiveness from the campaign management portal. This way, the administrator can identify the people who are learning and not learning and also identify which types of malicious emails users may need additional training to recognize.

Pricing is on a per-user basis and gives businesses an annual subscription to send out as many campaigns as desired throughout the year. While a 25-user license would start at about $10 per user, per year, the price would scale down as more users are added, according to Wombat Security. ??

Finding a Phishing Hole
I didn't realize just how hard it would be to set up the pool of users to participate in the test. Businesses planning on running PhishGuru will need to work very closely with IT before attempting the project. It is not something that can be done on the fly, especially if there are spam filters and other Email security products already in place.

My original plan was to pull together a list of my PCMag Labs colleagues to test the service (and their phish smarts!). Wombat said I would need to whitelist the domain that would be sending the simulated messages within Postini, which we use for our mail security. It turns out our in-house setup uses a lot of custom rules along with Postini's filters, so setting up this test would have required our IT team to manually tweak settings on each account being tested.

Our IT head honcho had some post-test concerns, as well. What if the people in the test forgot the simulation was finished and clicked on a "real" malicious message, thinking it was one of the PhishGuru tests? IT would have to deal with the cleanup.

Wombat assured me that it was possible to test across multiple domains, so we toyed with the idea of using personal email addresses, like the ones on Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail. However, I was concerned the test messages may get trapped by the spam filters on various Webmail services.

In the end, I wound up setting up a basic mail server by installing Postfix on an Amazon EC2 instance and created ten user accounts.

Baiting the Hook
The simulations are called "campaigns" in the PhishGuru world and are created using an online management portal. A new customer signs up for PhishGuru online or by contacting Wombat directly. The company currently offers a free simulation campaign, which is one email template sent to a group of users for one day. For the purpose of this review, I worked with Wombat to set up multiple campaigns over the space of one week.

After I received my account information, I logged into the management portal at phishguru.com and had the option to "Create New Campaign." At this point, I could create my test pool by uploading a comma-delimited file containing names, email addresses, and the name of the department for each test account. PhishGuru automatically created groups based on the email address, allowing me to keep track of results by group. An administrator could tell, for example, if the HR group was doing better or worse than Marketing in detecting phishing mail.

I went through the five-step process, deciding the users who should receive the phishing emails, selecting the type of email I would like to use, picking an email template and customizing it, choosing and customizing the training material to display, and scheduling when the messages will be sent. Once the campaign is created, a "test" message is sent to the administrator's account to verify it looks correct. I clicked on a confirmation link in the test mail to verify the test message.

How Some Types of Roof Materials can Change How Toronto Houses

Exceeding other architectural elements, the roofing can specify the figure of your property, such as how long it will endure and how critically it is being taken care of. The architectural style may give its form, but the roofing will still literally control the exterior structure-it being the topmost and the most apparent portion from a range. Roofs provide protection and design to your home.

Being llocated on top, nevertheless, can have its pluses and minuses. Since it shields the top section of a structure, it functions as a defense from the weather, but its inaccessibility causes it to be least visited or maintained. The second is a result of its presence, or non-visibility, although it is certainly among the most important parts of the house.

The importance of the roof construction could not be overemphasized-any damage to it will definitely impact the whole home. Therefore, its right servicing should be among leading issues of a homeowner. Given that roofs are often difficult to access without the need for a long step ladder, the owner must take added works during roofing examination and servicing.

In Canada, particularly in developed cities like Toronto, there are several styles of houses. While the prevailing climates decide on the sort of roofing materials used in the town, the architecture usually takes precedence as the basis of selection. A southern colonial house would look awful with cedar shakes roofing, although metal roofs may not be suitable for a old-time design house.

Probably the most common roofing material in Toronto is the asphalt shingles, which also appear in some residences across the country. They are not only relatively less expensive, asphalt shingles can also adapt to almost any kind of home buildings and are simple to install. This is one cause nearly all households decide on this material for assembly by roofing contractors in Toronto.

A roofing company Toronto based contractor also offers various other roofing materials to homeowners like concrete tile roofing. Ceramic tile tagged as one of the most versatile materials because it copies the appearance of slate, shake, or terra-cotta tiles. This roof material is also very durable and can survive lengthier than most of the other commercially available roofing materials.

Although there are many roofing materials which can suit your home architecture, your roof may not need instant replacement. It is suggested to initially employ experts on roofing repair Toronto contractors provide to assist you in figuring out its condition-only when this has been done should you make your choice. Whatever roofing material matches your price range and preference, you can depend on professional installers to allow you to decide on effectively. Persuasive Speech Topics ? 3 Hot Tips on Choosing Your ...

Writing a persuasive article can be quite fun yet challenging. However, before you even get to that point, you have to deal with choosing the right subject. Persuasive speech topics are usually more serious than subjects of other essays. You have to think of something that has weight and has two sides to it.

You may think that choosing persuasive speech topics is a piece of cake. But know that whatever you choose can greatly affect how your article is going to turn out. The wrong topic can backfire on you and all your hard work.

In order to prevent that from happening, here are some pointers on how to choose the best persuasive speech topics.

1) Watch the news.

It?s highly important to keep up with the current events. Watching the news will give you a good range of topics to choose from. You?ll even get bonus points for writing about something that is timely and significant to your readers and your time. So the next time you find yourself eating dinner in front of the television, why not switch to the news channel every now and then?

2) Find your comfort zone.

When choosing persuasive speech topics, you also have to consider where you are comfortable. After all, the words and delivery of the speech will rest on your overall perspective of the issue. If you?re not comfortable with writing about sending soldiers in Iraq, for example, you might miss out on all the important details.

3) Read others? works.

One way you can choose great persuasive speech topics is by looking at other such works. Right now, a lot of people are writing about global warming. Other examples include the teaching of Creationism in schools, the war in Iraq, smoking and animal rights.

Once you?ve accomplished all three pointers, you can now go about choosing the greatest persuasive speech topics for you. Remember, whatever you choose will have a significant impact on the overall result of your article. So keep up with the news, find your comfort zone and familiarize yourself with other pieces.

Real Estate Investing Principles: How to Build a Solid Business ...

real estate investing principles

In a day where we are WOW?d and AMAZED by marketing minds through TV, billboards, magazine ads, internet flash ads, etc., we can easily become distracted by the glamour and fantasy of things and lose touch with reality.? In my last blog post, I explained that by watching HGTV and other home improvement shows, we can learn trends and styles and glean great ideas to improve our product as investors.? But as one person so aptly commented, you have to filter out all of the junk.? You have to chew the meat and spit out the bones!

When our family initially set out to conquer the world of real estate investing, we knew we needed some direction, some guidance, some help! ?There is so much information, so many ideas that it is 100% overwhelming for the newbie investor. ?We began looking into all of the guru products and were turned off by 95% of them. ?After much toil, we bought Dave Whisnant?s investor course and dived into all of the nuggets he had to offer. ?Though we learned several good how-to?s and tips and tricks, what really launched us towards success is this:

Applied Principles

Oh man, how boring! ?Sounds like a graduate level physics course. ?To me it sounds like money in the bank?

What the newbie investor needs above all else is to learn the?Basic Principles of Investing, People, and Business.

I realize that this is probably a worn out topic, but we need to keep wearing it out because good ideas come and go, but principles never, ever fail!

Example: You don?t have to wonder if the universal principle of gravity is going to work. ?It will work 10 times out of 10 because it is a universal principle! ?There is no reason to test a principle. ?You can bet on it.

So, this blog post and the one to follow are aimed at the newbie investor or the experienced investor that might be struggling to break through to a new level. ?We have all experienced this ?resistance,? whether new to REI or with years of experience under our belt.

I proclaim that the most important thing for a newbie investor is a foundation of solid principles. ?I also proclaim that what it takes to launch your investing career is also required to grow your investing business for years. ?Forgive me for being vague, but bear with me.

 • Have you hit a rut in your investing business?
 • Are you not able to break through to that new level of investing that you have been desiring (and desiring for a long time)?

?
We tend to look for the next ?new? idea or a quick fix to propel us forward. ?Gurus are always marketing new ideas that are ?revolutionary? and can take your business to the next level. ?They sound exciting and you believe it only to end up going around the same mountain back at the same place.

Educating yourself is a given. ?You must do it and it is easier than ever to learn how to invest in Real Estate. ?With sites like BiggerPockets, you can learn more than you really want to know. ?So, please keep in mind that I am assuming that you are doing all you can to learn and stay on top of the real estate trends and markets.

With that being said, I want to propose some principles in this blog and the next one that will help you be successful and grow your business. ?Although this is not a comprehensive list, I believe these are a few of the big ones.

The Golden Rule Principle?- We all know this one! ?Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.? Real Estate investing is not about real estate as much as it is about people. ?Whether you are buying or selling, you are dealing with people. ?We should make it common practice to put ourselves in other people?s shoes before we open our mouth. ?As a rehabber, I am daily dealing with people in distressed and terrible situations. ?Many times they are fragile and desperate for help. ?So, when you are talking with a potential seller and you realize that they owe more than the house is worth, do you treat them differently? ?If someone has nothing to offer you financially, do you treat them differently than if they could be a potential home run? ?The answer needs to be NO!

If you are the General Contractor on your flips, how do you treat your subs? ?Do you pay them on time and as agreed? ?Many sub-contractors depend heavily on timely pay, so we need to be sensitive, and do what we say we are going to do.

This is a universal principle and needs to be applied to our investing career. ?The most successful investors I know, treat other people well.

The Principle of Sowing and Reaping ? If a farmer does not sow the seed into the field, he will surely never reap a harvest. ?With anything in life, you have to put something in to get something out. ?We have all heard the saying, ?You are paying your dues?. ?In actuality, ?paying your dues? is nothing less than sowing into your business. ?The problem with sowing into your business, can be that it feels like that is all you are doing. ?You give, give, give and seemingly nothing is happening and nothing is ever going to happen.

That is a lie!

You can bet on a principle to work, and the principle of sowing and reaping is as sure to work as gravity!

Newbie Investor: ?Don?t give up! ?Just keep sowing into your business and be patient. ?Life seems to be set up in a way that you have to work hard for anything that is good. ?This is where most gurus have lead the newbie investor astray. ?They want you to believe that as soon as you start, you are going to make a $40k profit. ?Rarely is this the case! ?You have to work hard and sow into your field, and then the fruit will come for you.

Experienced Investor: Are you in a rut? ?Time to start sowing into your business again. ?We can become comfortable with our results and stop sowing into our marketing and our systems. ?Those field need more seeds sown into them. ?Get out of that comfortable chair and sow, sow, sow. ?You know what to do and what you do not need is another guru course. ?You will reap in due season!

Please tune in next week for several more principles that will never fail you!

Kashmir's pet lovers may now choose coloured fish - Free Press ...

fish

SRINAGAR, May 26: People in Kashmir can soon liven themselves by keeping coloured fish as pets at their homes.

The Fisheries Department of Jammu and Kashmir will shortly be releasing 8,000 seeds of coloured fish varieties in the market.

?Around 8000 seeds of many coloured strains of fish have been developed by the department which will be made available in the market,? an official spokesman said after a meeting chaired by state Fisheries Minister Ajaz Ahmad Khan here in Srinagar.

The coloured fish varieties are expected to be a hit in Kashmir in view of an increasing interest among people who now plan ponds and aquaria at their homes.

The marketing of coloured fish varieties will add another feather in the cap of the department which has won accolades for successful trout farming in the valley.

Addressing the meeting, the minister asked all district heads to take up the vacation of security forces from their premises with respective Deputy Commissioners.

Khan also asked the Director Fisheries to take up the matter of withdrawal of security forces from fisheries department complexes with Divisional Commissioners as well.

The Minister stressed on giving backyard fisheries a thrust in view of the interest it has generated among people who now plan ponds and aquaria at their houses.

Khan also reviewed the status of fish reservoirs at Salal, Baglihar, Uri and other dams and asked the officers to tap the potential of high altitude lakes which are ideal for trout production, the spokesman said.

Fast and Effective Pain Management | Health & Fitness Tips By ...

Saridon is what is known as an analgesic, or a painkiller. Effective headache relief is difficult, and therefore this combination is used to combat pain. At present, the formulation itself consists of 250mg of paracetamol, 150mg of propyphenazoneand 50mg of caffeine. In comparison to other drugs which can be effective when managing headaches (such as ibuprofen and paracetamol on its own),?Saridon?has a much faster effect usually within fifteen minutes of taking it.

There is no need to have a prescription if you want to buy?Saridon, so for those who suffer from intense headaches it can be a relief. It is usually advised for the relief of headaches that range from mild to severe, but can also be used when trying to combat things like menstrual discomfort, postoperative pain and toothache. People who suffer from colds and influenza will also be able to use it for relief.

The paracetamol that is contained within Saridon is slow to act, but its duration will last much longer. On the other hand, however, propyphenazone acts quite fast but does not last as long as paracetamol. Mixed together, these two drugs help to create a much longer lasting effect, and one that starts almost immediately. According to tests, there have been no fatalities due to Saridon.

For those wishing to take Saridon, the recommended dosage is usually going to be one to two tablets for a single dose for adults. Adolescents between twelve and sixteen years should take only one tablet at a time. Within the space of twenty four hours, if it is at all necessary, the individual may take three doses.

Saridon is available in over eighty countries across the world. These include Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. The convenience of not needing prescriptions may help for those who suffer from migraines.

Gay marriage: About time or unnatural? | Atlanta Forward

Today, a same-sex marriage proponent calls gay marriage the new normal. An opponent? says such unions erode the country?s moral fabric.

Let us know what you think with comments below. Moderator Rick Badie leads the discussion.

Lift marriage barrier for same-sex couples

By Matt Hennie

There?s a ?new normal? brewing across the country, yet it embraces values that have stood the test of time: equality and freedom.

That ?new normal? is what Gallup calls the acceptance of same-sex couples that they find is growing. A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of Americans agree that gay and lesbian relationships are ?morally acceptable.? Even more say same-sex couple relationships should be legal.

Package that with the endorsement delivered earlier this month by President Barack Obama and it?s clear the tide is shifting in favor of marriage equality.

Acceptance is coming to Georgia, too, though at a much slower pace. A recent Landmark Communications/Rosetta Stone poll for WSB-TV shows 59 percent of Georgians are opposed to gay marriage, a number that has shrunk since nearly three-quarters of voters in 2004 approved adding a same-sex marriage ban to the state Constitution. It?s still substantial and a sentiment that is shared across the South.

But what the current polls don?t show is that Atlanta is packed with same-sex couples and ranks among the top five in large cities across the U.S. for same-sex households. It?s the same across metro Atlanta and the rest of Georgia. Same-sex couples live in the mountains, along the coast and in the southwest corner of the state, too. And these couples, just like their heterosexual neighbors, are in loving and committed relationships, promising to care for one another for better and for worse.

Unlike their neighbors, though, they can?t share their marriage vows with one another and legally show they cherish their partner in the same way their straight neighbors do. Don?t be lured into embracing the fears manufactured by opponents of same-sex marriage. They want to distract you from the Golden Rule, twist its meaning and convince you that what poll after poll shows ? more Americans support same-sex marriage than oppose it ? is wrong. It?s not.

Don?t be fooled into thinking that same-sex marriage is about rights or that because I may want to marry my partner some day means your marriage needs to be redefined. Plain and simple, this is about respecting the tradition of marriage, its importance in society and allowing gay couples to join the institution, not change it.

I respect the honor and tradition that comes with marriage; it worked for my parents, and I want the chance to have it work for me.

Gay couples share the ideals that marriage is a heavy responsibility and comes with a lifetime commitment and we want to express that to our partner. Gay marriage is not a game. It?s not a political strategy and it shouldn?t be used as a weapon to beat down the love I have for my partner.

Matt Hennie is founder of Project Q Atlanta, an online media source that reports on gay and lesbian issues in metro Atlanta.

Marriage: One man, one woman

By Ray Newman

After President Barack Obama?s endorsement of same-sex marriage, I was interviewed by several media outlets. Each interviewer wanted to know my first reaction. I said, ?I was not surprised.?
The simple truth is anyone who had been paying attention to the culture and signals from this White House would have known the direction in which it was headed. Vice President Joe Biden had indicated his support for same-sex marriage, saying he had changed his opinion after having watched a sitcom on television. I further stated that I was saddened by the endorsement.
Following the president?s announcement, many people began to second-guess its timing. It would be interesting to know why the Wednesday before the national observance of Mother?s Day would be picked as the day of the president?s endorsement. It is also interesting that following the vote on Tuesday in North Carolina, in support of a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman, the next day would be set as the day of the president?s endorsement.
There are now more than 30 states that have passed amendments or initiatives defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Thirteen states, including Georgia, voted in 2004 to add the definition to their constitution.
We come to this issue from several perspectives. First, the historic social issue of marriage. Traditionally, each culture for centuries has accepted marriage as a union between one man and one woman. In fact, the first definition of marriage given in the dictionary is: ?The social institution under which a man and woman live as husband and wife by legal or religious commitments.?
We see the Judeo-Christian moral foundation as a major building block of societies and cultures. The Judeo-Christian moral foundation of our nation has served as the major building block of our nation. The marriage ceremony indicates before witnesses that a man and woman are joined in a covenant intimate relationship.
Finally, we look at this issue from a political viewpoint. We are watching as morals are moving away in order to assure rights. We are being told that, politically, we must evolve into an amoral world view in order to assure rights that are granted to certain behaviors.
I am saddened we have come to the place in our nation where cultural changes are now impacting behavior more than the traditional building blocks that have served us well throughout history. I affirm my position in support of the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
The foundation upon which our nation is built must remain strong or we will see the nation fall into ruin.

Cheap Home Theater System - Be Entertained With A Cheap Home ...

High definition televisions do indeed come in large sizes, but there is a pretty hefty cost associated with the mere purchase of the bulky, space consuming gadget. An item which can be bought at half the cost of a large TV would be a high definition projector. Projectors work well with the usual sources - cable, Blu-ray player and X-box. The only major drawback of opting for a projector is that you will need a very dark room in order to view the image.

If you want to stick with the big flat screen TV, the brick and mortar store is not your last bet. Take for instance the extreme savings you could incur with online shopping. Not only is it less physically demanding, but you can do many price comparisons with as many tabs in your browser window as you want open. Sites like Pricegrabber.com will compare for you directly. Reviews can be examined on Consumer Reports. Deals are featured on Amazon.com. And of course, the competitive bargaining occurring on Ebay.com may land you a great deal.

When it comes to outfitting your home theater with HDMI cables, shop in a knowledgeable way. According to PC World and their testing of HDMI cables, a $10 is just as reliable, safe, and effective as it's $100 counterpart. Basically, if you can wait for shipping to occur (and many expedited next day shipping options are offered), there is no reason to overspend on an overpriced and over packaged cable.

As for music CDs - the reason they are still around is to whittle your savings. Just about anything on a CD has an mp3 version you can download online. Amazon MP3 has an elaborate collection. As far as AM and FM stations, now you can make preset stations with music sites like Pandora.

Is Blu-ray really essential? In reality, even though Blu-ray has been around for a while, the price doesn't seem to decrease, and the movies offered in Blu-ray disc form are modest.

Why should you pay for cable these days? After all with memberships to Netflix starting with a one month free trial of service, or Hulu.com which offers shows for free - it has to be asked, how much can you really view? Most of the time is spent surfing channels to find the best show. It's much more easier to choose a program that you will actually enjoy.

Doing the research takes some effort, and making the purchase happens quite quickly. Get the research done first so that as a knowledgeable buyer you will stay thrifty and pleased.

By putting into place most of these suggestions, you could be saving a large amount of cash. Get informed about your options and you can personalize cheap home theater systems that your family will get their biggest entertainment value from.

GREE's new global mobile-social gaming platform enters open beta

Mobile social game network GREE today announced its new global platform is now in open beta for developers.

The new mobile-social gaming platform combies elements from GREE?s existing Japanese platform and OpenFeint, the iOS social gaming network GREE acquired for $104 million?last April. According to GREE?s SVP of Product Ethan Fassett, the company?s new global platform has been designed to help create a worldwide, online community focused around free-to-play titles.

GREE is inviting developers to download the new platform?s SDK, which will allow developers to easily implement social features like invites, leaderboards and achievements into their games.

When it comes out of beta, GREE?s global platform will launch with over 60 titles.?Up until now GREE has been testing the North America market with two first-party games ? its card-battle title ?Zombie Jombie?and the kid-friendly Alien Family. Although Alien Family has had limited success so far,?Zombie Jombie?seems to have its footing. The title is currently the No. 13 top grossing game and No. 17 top grossing app in the iTunes App Store.

In addition to developing its own first party titles, GREE has also been busy lining up partnerships to bolster its platform?s launch lineup. So far the company has signed content deals with?Crowdstar, iWin,?Ubisoft, Gameloft?and top-tier Chinese developers like?Haypi, Hoolai and PunchBox. GREE?s platform will also launch with games from Funzio, the mid-core mobile and social developer it acquired for?$210 million earlier this month.

The new GREE global platform will probably be tempting for developers to get on board with, if for no other reason than its impressive network of 230 million users. However, even in the relatively undeveloped North American mobile-social game market, GREE?s offering faces some stiff competition. The company?s arch-rival DeNA has just begun moving onto iOS after establishing its lead on Android, and has brought its top grossing card-battle game Rage of Bahamut with it. Both companies are also pitting themselves against Apple?s Game Center, which acts as the default social gaming layer on iOS.

Although currently only available in English and Japanese, the GREE platform will be available in 14 other languages by September. Developers interested in the?new platform can learn more at GREE?s official site.
