"Anger Management" makes syndication deal

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Here's a deal Charlie Sheen isn't mad at: the FX series "Anger Management" is getting syndicated to Fox Television Stations beginning in September 2014 - after airing for just one season.

The Fox stations will have plenty of episodes to re-air. Under an unusual deal, the series was picked up for 90 episodes after meeting a ratings threshold set by FX in its first season, which premiered in June. Fox Television Stations acquired the off-network rights from Debmar-Mercury in a cash and barter deal. No terms were disclosed.

The show will air on nine Fox stations. FX will retain the exclusive cable rights to its reruns.

"Typical wisdom says off-cable shows aren't right for general syndication, but that's way too narrow minded for today's reality," said Frank Cicha, senior vice president of programming for Fox Television Stations. "When a program produces these ratings, regardless of the platform, you have to take it seriously. We did, and we expect 'Anger Management' to be a key piece of our sitcom dominance for years to come."

"Anger Management" will join Fox Television Stations' other off-network comedies, including syndication's No. 1 and 2 top syndicated shows of the past five years, "The Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family." Fox will offer double airings of "Anger Management" Monday through Sunday.

The series premiere episode of "Anger Management," which marked Sheen's return to series television after his high-profile firing from "Two and a Half Men," was the most-watched primetime scripted comedy series premiere in cable history. It completed its 10-episode summer run as the highest-rated new comedy series on cable in 2012, averaging 4.53 million total viewers and 2.5 million adults in the key 18-49 demographic.

"Anger Management" stars Sheen as Charlie Goodson, a retired baseball player who is now a therapist specializing in anger management. The cast includes Selma Blair as a therapist and Goodson's best friend - with whom he also has sex.

The show began production on its next episodes on September 24, with Sheen's father, Martin Sheen, joining the cast in a recurring role. Bruce Helford is the show's executive director and showrunner.

Mark Burg, Joe Roth, Vince Totino and Dave Caplan are executive producers. "Anger Management" is produced by Lionsgate Television and distributed by Debmar-Mercury.

The series will air on WNYW FOX 5/WWOR My9 (New York), KTTV FOX 11/KCOP My13 (Los Angeles), WFLD FOX 32/WPWR My50 (Chicago), KDFW FOX 4/KDFI My27 (Dallas), WTTG FOX 5/WDCA My20 (Washington D.C.), KRIV FOX 26/KTXH My20 (Houston), KSAZ FOX 10/KUTP My45 (Phoenix), KMSP FOX 9/WFTC My29 (Minneapolis) and WOFL FOX 35/WRBW My65 (Orlando).

New York City hospital evacuates patients and other health news ...

In a scramble that will be familiar to Louisiana medical professionals, one of New York City's hospitals evacuated patients last night after back-up power failed, the New York Times reported. NYU Langone Medical Center, located in lower Manhattan, started moving patients on Monday evening after emergency systems didn't start following power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The newspaper reported that all 215 patients were taken to other hospitals in the city.

Struggles with back-up systems at hospitals and nursing homes has been a consistent problem?in Louisiana following hurricanes. These problems rose to a crisis level following Hurricane Katrina, when patients were trapped in flooded hospitals for days until they could be evacuated.

Some families of patients who died while waiting rescue from the hot, powerless facilities said hospitals should have evacuated their relatives before the storm. In March 2011, Tenet Healthcare Corp., which had run Memorial Medical Center, settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of failing to adequately prepare.

But hospital and nursing home administrators have also struggled during more recent storms. Thousands of patients from the New Orleans area were evacuated to Baton Rouge in advance of Hurricane Gustav in 2008, only to end up in facilities without sufficient back-up power, which meant they lacked air conditioning. Some hospitals in the capital city ended up transporting patients back to New Orleans, which fared better during that storm.

Following the storm, ProPublica's Sheri Fink reported about the tradeoffs state officials had to consider when deciding to evacuate frail patients, who sometimes can't handle the move.?After Gustav, then-health secretary Alan Levine said he believed the state made the right decision to transport?patients out of the New Orleans area.

Most recently after Hurricane Isaac, Mayor Mitch Landrieu criticized private hospitals and nursing homes, saying they need to focus on having back-up power sources for disasters.

. . . . .

In other health care news this week, The?New York Times on Monday reported that the Obama?administration is finalizing rules that will put in place two nationwide health insurance plans available?throughout the country. The health insurance plans, which will contract with the federal government, are part of Obama's health care law. They were meant to increase competition in state insurance markets.

Some insurance commissioners are skeptical, saying these "multistate plans" need to be subject to the same regulations as other plans in their markets, according to the article.

. . . . .

Kaiser Health News interviewed uninsured patients in Miami and found they are not focusing on health care as they ponder who to vote for next week. Instead, the uninsured people who spoke about their intentions said they were more focused on other issues, such as what the candidates would do for the poor in general, or their positions on Cuban immigration.

Majority of US drones openly broadcast video feeds (Wired UK)

Four years after discovering that militants were tapping into drone video feeds, the US military still hasn't secured the transmissions of more than half of its fleet of Predator and Reaper drones, Wired.com has learned. The majority of the aircraft still broadcast their classified video streams "in the clear" -- without encryption. With a minimal amount of equipment and know-how, militants can see what America's drones see.

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, have become the single most important weapon in America's far-flung pursuit of violent extremists. Hundreds of American Predators and Reapers fly above Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, and Afghanistan -- watching suspected enemies, and striking them when necessary. Nearly 3,000 people have been killed in the decade-long drone campaign.

"If somebody could obtain reliable access to real-time Predator or Reaper video -- without attribution or alerting US military -- that would a tremendous intel coup," says Micah Zenko, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. "There is an insatiable demand from Predator and Reaper imagery in Afghanistan and elsewhere. Any reluctance to use those for spying or missile strikes places operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia at some risk."

Military officials have known about -- and mostly shrugged off -- the vulnerability since the development of the Predator in the 1990s. But the problem drew increased attention in 2008, when drone video footage was found on the laptops of Shi'ite militants in Iraq, who were able to intercept the feed using a piece of $26 (?16) software. The Pentagon and the defence industry assured the public that they'd close the hole by retrofitting the robotic aircraft with new communications protocols and encrypted transceivers that would keep the video from being intercepted again.

Four years into the effort, however, only "30 to 50 percent" of America's Predators and Reapers are using fully encrypted transmissions, a source familiar with the retrofitting effort told Wire.com. The total fleet won't see its communications secured until 2014. This source and others who work closely with drone operations say that drones flying overseas are among the first to get the newly secured equipment. They also noted that they are unaware of any incidents of militants using America's unmanned eyes in the sky to their advantage. "But I'm surprised I haven't," the source adds. "And that doesn't mean it's not happening."

This isn't the only vulnerability in the drone fleet. In March of 2011, an unknown software glitch caused a Predator stationed at a US base in Africa to start its engine without human direction. Last October, as Wired.com first reported, Air Force technicians discovered a virus infecting the drones' remote cockpits in Las Vegas. It took weeks of sustained effort to clean up the machines. The aircraft, which rely on GPS to guide them through the air, can run into problems if GPS signals are jammed in a particular area -- something that can be done with cheap, commercially available hardware. Iranian officials claimed they hacked the GPS control signal of an advanced drone, though it's impossible to verify the claim.

No one who works with UAVs is questioning the fundamental integrity of the drone fleet at the moment; it would take an incredibly sophisticated hacker to commandeer a Predator, for example. Nor is anyone pretending that this premiere tool of the US global counterterror campaign is flawless.

Predators and the larger, better-armed Reapers transmit video and accept instructions in one of two ways. The first is via satellite, to remote pilots and sensor operators who are often on the other side of the planet; these satellite communications are encrypted, and are generally considered secure.

The second is through a radio frequency signal called the Common Data Link, which is used to share the drone's video feed with troops on the ground. The CDL's carrier signal -- its specific pattern of frequencies, in a given order and for a given length of time -- tells both transmitter and receiver on how to function. The problem is that the Predators' version of the CDL carrier signal (also known as a "waveform") didn't include an order to encrypt the signal. So neither the transmitter on the drone nor the receivers that troops used on the ground employed encryption, either.

There were reasons for this. The original Predator, just 8 metres long, was little more than a scaled-up model plane with an 85-horsepower engine. It had a payload of just 450 kg for all its fuel, cameras and radios. And encryption systems can be heavy. (Big crypto boxes are a major reason the Army's futuristic universal radio ended up being too bulky for combat, for example.) With the early Predator models, the Air Force made the conscious decision to leave off the crypto.

The flying branch was well aware of the risk. "Depending on the theatre of operation and hostile electronic combat systems present, the threat to the UAVs could range from negligible with only a potential of signal intercept for detection purpose, to an active jamming effort made against an operating, unencrypted UAV," the Air Force reported in 1996." The link characteristics of the baseline Predator system could be vulnerable to corruption of down links data or hostile data insertions."

The Predator models steadily grew in power and payload, and took a big leap in dimensions and capability with the 11-metre-long Reaper version introduced in 2007. The Reaper has a 950-horsepower engine and a nearly 1,814-kilogram payload -- more than enough capacity for crypto-enabled systems which, like all electronics, had shrunk in size and weight.

The problem was that, by then, the military had rushed to the battlefield hundreds of Remotely Operated Video Enhanced Receivers, or Rovers -- rugged, laptop-sized receivers with screens for watching drone footage. And those early version of the Rovers were developed and distributed so fast, the military once again left the crypto off. "It could be both intercepted (e.g., hacked into) and jammed," emails an Air Force officer with knowledge of the program.

Which mean the Pentagon was stuck, for a time. The military couldn't replace the old CDL waveform with something encryptable until the Rovers -- and the radio transmitters aboard the Predators -- could handle such a signal.

Eventually, the Rovers began to be swapped out for newer models. The latest version, the " Tactical Rover," (.pdf) is about the size of an old-school mobile phone. It can use both the Advanced Encryption Standard and the triple-Data Encryption Standard to secure video feeds. There are now about a thousand of the units in the military's hands.

And now, the Predators and Reapers are starting to get enhanced radios, too. "The fleet-wide upgrade begins later this year and carries on for several years," says Maj. Mary Danner-Jones, an Air Force spokesperson. The service is spending $12 million (?7.4 million) on crypto-enabled Vortex transceivers (.pdf).

That's allowing a new, hardened waveform to be introduced throughout the Predator and Reaper fleet. The Air Force recently gave Predator-maker General Atomics Aeronautical Systems a $26 million (?16 million) contract to retrofit its drone cockpits to accept the carrier signal, among other enhancements.

The question is why hasn't this happened sooner. After all, the Navy installed multiple layers of encryption in their 'bots some time ago. Navy spokesman Jamie Cosgrove tells Wired.com that "the vast majority" of naval drones are encrypted -- "and have been since development."

One source who works on developing Navy UAVs, but is not authorised the speak on the record, explains why: "Standard unencrypted video is basically a broadcast to whoever can figure out the right carrier frequency, so essentially, we are simulcasting to battlefield commanders and the opposing force. If that opposing force knows we can see them and from where, they can take better evasive manoeuvres."

It's possible that none of the militants America is trying today are as sophisticated as the ones who intercepted that drone video in 2008. It's possible that the value of such footage-from-above is so fleeting that opponents have never again bothered to grab it. But it's worth noting that Predator and Reaper video is considered by the US military to be classified information. And when US commanders on the ground get into a firefight, the first call they usually make is for a drone, so they can take a look at the battlefield through the eyes of a drone.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden is joking about running for president in 2016.

During a visit to a Sarasota, Fla., restaurant on Wednesday, Biden took a customer's cellphone and engaged the man on the other end ? apparently the customer's brother ? in a lengthy discussion of the health care overhaul law.

After a while, Biden told the man, who seemed to be a Republican, that he wasn't going to argue with him to get his vote. Then Biden said: "After it's all over, when your insurance rates go down, then you'll vote for me in 2016."

Biden's campaign declined to comment on his remark or clarify his plans for 2016.

The exchange followed a political rally in which Biden slammed a GOP ad on the auto industry as "flagrantly dishonest."

Romney, GOP suddenly plunging onto Democratic turf

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Mitt Romney is suddenly plunging into traditionally Democratic-leaning Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and his GOP allies are trying to put Michigan into play. It's forcing President Barack Obama to defend his own turf ? he's pouring money into television ads in the states and dispatching top backers ? in the campaign's final week.

The question is: Why this Republican move?

GOP efforts in the trio of Rust Belt states could indicate that Romney is desperately searching for a last-minute path to the needed 270 Electoral College votes ? without all-important Ohio. Or just the opposite, that he's so confident in the most competitive battlegrounds that he's pressing for insurance against Obama in what's expected to be a close race.

Or perhaps the Republican simply has money to burn. Use it now or never.

Former President Bill Clinton was dispatched in response on Tuesday. "Barack Obama's policies work better," he declared on the University of Minnesota campus, one of his two stops in a state that offers 10 electoral votes and hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972.

This late-game expansion of a campaign playing field that, until now, had focused on just nine states was taking place exactly a week from Election Day. At the same time, Obama spent a second day in Washington to focus on his presidential duties and Romney edged back into active campaigning in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

"This is a tough time for millions of people ... but America is tougher," the president said during a brief visit to the American Red Cross, where he sought to reassure victims, encourage aid workers ? and warn of more storm damage to come with rising floodwater.

In Ohio, Romney, too, spoke of concern for storm victims, telling supporters who were collecting supplies that "a lot of people hurting this morning."

Beyond the candidates' pause from feverish campaigning, the impact of the storm on the election wasn't all that clear.

National polls show an even race for the popular vote, though Obama appears to have both an edge in key battleground states in the electoral vote hunt and more state-by-state pathways to reach the 270-vote threshold.

Of the nine states where the two men have spent more than $1 billion in advertising since June, Romney is in the strongest position in North Carolina. But public and internal campaign polls show he's locked in stubbornly tight battles in Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada and Virginia and is fighting to overtake Obama's advantage in crucial Ohio as well as Iowa and Wisconsin.

That said, Romney still could win. Anything can happen in the race's closing days ? including Democratic-leaning states like Minnesota, Pennsylvania or Michigan going Republican.

Clinton's Minnesota visit came just days after Romney and his allies started airing TV ads in the state. GOP-leaning groups including Americans for Job Security and American Future Fund were spending $615,000 this week. Romney spent a much lighter $29,000 last week, and it was unclear how much his campaign was spending this week. All together, the efforts led Obama to follow suit to prevent the state from slipping out of his grasp. His campaign was spending $210,000 on ads in Minnesota this week.

Polls show Romney having gained ground in Minnesota though still trailing Obama. And Obama has a much larger campaign footprint of paid staff and volunteers, including more than 30 full-time workers and 12 offices. Romney never has established much of campaign organization in Minnesota.

In Pennsylvania, Romney's campaign started pouring money into TV ads Monday for the first time, though Republican-leaning groups have been on the air in recent days trying to narrow the Obama advantage indicated by surveys. Republican groups - American Crossroads, Restore Our Future and Americans for Job Security - are spending at least $3.9 million this week. That does not include spending by Romney's campaign. Obama aides said the president's campaign is spending $625,000.

Romney has sent most of his Pennsylvania team to other states in recent weeks, and he has had no plan to visit, raising questions about whether he is actually playing to win the state that offers 20 electoral votes and last went Republican in the 1988 presidential election.

GOP allies also were running TV ads in Democratic-tilting Michigan in hopes of softening the ground for Romney in the final days, but there was no indication yet that the Republican himself would make a strong 11th-hour play for the state where he was born and raised. Obama's team said late Tuesday that it was answering Restore Our Future's $2 million in ads in Michigan, which has 16 electoral votes.

Obama's team cast Romney's moves into the three states, which have trended Democrat for more than 20 years, as a desperate act by a candidate who hasn't locked up the states he needs for a White House win.

"They understand they're not going to be able to win Ohio and now they're getting desperate and want to be able to put other states in play," Messina said. "We're going to win Pennsylvania, but we aren't taking anything for granted."

Romney political director Rich Beeson argued that Romney was playing to win, saying in a campaign memo: "With one week to go, and 96% of the vote on the table on Election Day in Pennsylvania, this expansion of the electoral map demonstrates that Governor Romney's momentum has jumped containment from the usual target states."

Other Republicans debated Romney's tactics.

Some GOP strategists in Washington and key states suggested the moves into Minnesota and Pennsylvania provide a cushion for the GOP candidate in case he loses Ohio or another key state.

"I don't think he has to break down a wall," said Republican strategist Greg Strimple, who was the pollster for 2008 GOP nominee John McCain's presidential campaign. "He's in position to run the table, but he needs to have an insurance card in there in case he doesn't."

Still others said it was simply a matter of Romney's campaign and backers having so much money that they can afford to make low-probability efforts in the off-chance that one might bear fruit. Many pointed out that it is almost impossible at this late date for the campaigns and their allied groups to buy more ads in saturated states such as Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

"It's not really desperation" that drives such decisions, said veteran GOP strategist Mike McKenna of Richmond, Va. "You think, 'Maybe I can make the other guy spend some money there,'" even if the state is probably out of reach.

Other Republicans joined Democrats in saying that Romney options are shrinking and he had no choice but to find different paths to victory, and had the money to do it.

"If they didn't have so much money, they wouldn't be able to do something with so little chance of success," said Tad Devine, top electoral strategist for Democratic nominee Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

He called the Minnesota and Pennsylvania efforts by Romney more a "head-fake than a strategic move" because of what he called enormous Democratic voting trends and electoral advantages. Those include a heavy union presence in both states and a large minority population in Pennsylvania.

Obama carried Pennsylvania and Minnesota each by 10 percentage points in 2008.

Sandy strikes in Canada too, far from storm's center

(Reuters) - More than 100,000 Canadians were still without power on Tuesday after the huge storm Sandy toppled trees and power lines in Canada's most populous provinces, killed one person, and halted units at an Ontario refinery.

But Canada was far from the center of the storm and the impact was tiny compared to the vast outages and widespread flooding seen in the U.S. East Coast on Monday and Tuesday. The weakened storm is expected bring rain to Eastern Canada and Quebec on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

One woman was killed when she was struck by a sign in a Toronto shopping mall parking lot on Monday night, when Ontario officials had warned people to stay inside.

By late morning on Tuesday, power had been restored to nearly half of the 60,000 Toronto residents who lost electricity. But the local utility said some people might be without power until Thursday evening.

At least 150,000 Canadians lost power during the worst of the storm.

The Toronto Stock Exchange was open for trading on Tuesday, making it a North American island of equity trading for the second successive day, with U.S. stock markets again closed.

Air Canada, WestJet Airlines, Porter Airlines canceled dozens of flights, most of them to cities in the east of the United States.

"It's been a long night," said Mike Bradley, mayor of the Lake Huron border city of Sarnia, Ontario, where winds are expected to gust to 100 km/h (60 mph) on Tuesday.

"Waves were running from six to nine meters, which people around here cannot remember for at least a generation," he told CBC.

Several units at Imperial Oil Ltd's 121,000 barrel a day refinery at Sarnia were shut down in the outage. Power was later restored and the company said it planned to restart some of the units.

On the St Lawrence Seaway, a critical freight waterway shared by Canada and the United States, some vessels chose to anchor due to high winds, and 12 were delayed as of Tuesday morning, said Andrew Bogora, spokesman for the St Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. The Seaway remained open.

Media, advertisers ready for audience surge

Sometimes it's not the size of the storm, it's where it hits. As Hurricane Sandy raged through one of the country's most densely populated regions, it created a surge in online traffic Monday as people sought weather-related news and various forms of online entertainment.

One of the biggest beneficiaries of the brisk online traffic was The Weather Channel, which began streaming its television feed live on YouTube and on its own website late Sunday night. On Monday, the channel's website had its biggest day ever, serving up 200 million page views as of 7 p.m. Eastern.

"It's like our mini Super Bowl," said Curt Hecht, the chief global revenue officer for channel owner The Weather Co. "As a company, everybody really pulls together. There are three or four or five days when nobody's sleeping, when we need to be at our best."

Free online access to the live feed of The Weather Channel is unusual but not unheard of. The channel is usually restricted to the televisions of pay TV subscribers, but exceptions are made in disaster situations. It is the first time the channel has partnered with YouTube on a live feed.

With an increase in audience comes a surge in advertising revenue. Regular TV commercials were not played in the online Weather Channel stream, but insurer State Farm sponsored a banner ad that ran along the bottom of the screen over a weather map shown during commercial breaks.

Companies like insurer The Travelers Companies Inc. and The Procter & Gamble Co.'s Duracell are sponsoring the Weather Channel service that lets people know which of their Facebook friends lie in the storm's path.

With ads already running on The Weather Channel, Duracell is planning to send out trucks to give away free batteries in the storm's aftermath. They will also let people charge their cellphones and mobile devices for free.

"The panic starts when people don't prepare," said Duracell's associate director of global communications, Win Sakdinan. He recommended that people in the storm's path stock up now or wait until it's calmer and stores are open for batteries needed for flashlights and radios.

Other companies like home improvement retailers and generator makers bought bulk airtime on The Weather Channel months ago in preparation for major weather events. Advertisers that have nothing to do with severe weather were also looking to buy commercial spots as people begin to turn away from regular programming to pay attention to storm-related news.

Online access to news sites began spiking over the weekend. The Weather Channel's Weather.com had 105.4 million page views on Sunday, its fifth biggest day ever. On Monday, it handily beat its previous one-day record of 140.9 million page views set on Feb. 1, 2011 when a blizzard blanketed the northeastern U.S. and Canada with snow.

CNN.com had 55.3 million page views as of 2 p.m. Eastern time, up 132 percent from the previous four Mondays.

Newspapers such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Baltimore Sun lifted restrictions on their websites Monday so they were available to people who don't pay for access.

"It's a public service, we're concerned about disseminating critical information," said Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy.

The Journal's WSJ.com website, which already offered free access to stories about Hurricane Sandy, lifted all barriers to online access at midnight Eastern time on Sunday.

The weather also created a challenge for some smaller publishers. The Star Democrat in Easton, Md., and Cecil Whig in Elkton, Md., both did not publish print editions on Monday, although both papers' websites were posting regular updates about the storm's progress.

Calls to the Star Democrat's newsroom were not answered. Calls to the Cecil Whig were disconnected.

Some people simply wanted an escape from the news on Monday. Netflix Inc. said video streaming was up 20 percent compared with last Monday. A lot of the activity came from the New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore areas. And, of course, many children's titles were popular, "a sign that kids are staying home from school," said Netflix spokesman Joris Evers.

Insights into new therapy for rare form of cystic fibrosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto have established that a drug recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat a rare form of cystic fibrosis works in an unconventional way. Their results reveal new possibilities for treating various forms of cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease afflicting about 70,000 people around the world. Cystic fibrosis patients carry a defective gene that disables or destroys its protein product, which normally regulates the transport of ions across cell borders. When that transport is disrupted, the viscosity of the mucus coating certain organs becomes too thick. A characteristic feature of the disease is thick mucus buildup in the air passages, which causes difficulty breathing and recurring infections.

While the FDA approved the drug VX-770 (also known by the trade names Kalydeco and Ivacaftor) to ease breathing in people with cystic fibrosis caused by a particular mutation in the CFTR protein (the acronym is short for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), exactly how VX-770 worked in those patients was unknown.

Scientists have understood for some time that normal CFTR regulation requires modification of the protein and binding of a small, energy-providing molecule -- adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. But, in their recent Journal of Biological Chemistry "Paper of the Week," Christine Bear and colleagues report that the drug opens both normal and mutant CFTR channels without ATP. Their results indicate that the compound binds to a different site on CTFR than ATP. Significantly, this finding may be useful in developing therapies for cystic fibrosis caused by various CFTR mutations that, like the G551D mutation that was studied, impair ATP-mediated channel regulation.

Bear's group determined how VX-770 works after developing a new experimental system that may have potential for discovering drugs that target the basic defects caused by CFTR mutations, Bear says. The system is useful for identifying compounds that interact with rare mutations such as G551D as well as the major CFTR mutant F508del, she said.

Blog Category: The Economics of Discrimination

Written by: *Peter A. Galick

Racism and racial inequality have purveyed nearly every facet of American society since before its inception.? On the other hand, some have asserted that we now live in a post-racial society, that is, a society that has transcended racial barriers and has entered an age of equality.? These bold assertions came into the popular limelight upon the election of Barak Obama as the 44th President of the United States.[1] ? For a short time, it appeared that we, as a society, had in fact become colorblind, making Reverend Martin Luther King?s dream a reality.[2] ? Then, just as publicly as America had ?transcended? racial barriers, the widely-publicized case involving the shooting of Trayvon Martin made it perfectly clear that American society is still battling the demons of our shameful history.[3] ? This drastic shift in attitudes has not only exposed a major issue affecting the daily lives of all Americans, but it has also lead to an extremely difficult question: is colorblindness a worthy goal in today?s society, or do attempts to discount race intentionally ignore practical realities?

Scholars have debated whether we do exist in a post-racial society, and whether a post-racial society can exist at all.[4] ? I truly believe a post-racial society can exist.? While it can be said that the very notion is an impossible ideal, I believe otherwise.? What I do not believe, is that a colorblind society could exist today.? Nor do I believe that colorblindness is even a good thing were it possible in today?s society.? A conscious and informed discussion on race and racial inequality must take place if America is to ever truly transcend racial barriers. Perhaps one day, the ?impossible? ideal will be met, but until that day, a colorblind society is a blind society.

(AP) ? The city of San Francisco cleaned up Monday after a rowdy World Series celebration turned violent in some neighborhoods and police arrested three dozen people.

The majority of arrests occurred in the Mission District, and included two people on gun charges, police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

"There were celebrations all over the city, and they were all peaceful and upbeat," Andraychak said. "Unfortunately, as the night progressed, this other element emerged and were intent on doing violence."

Bonfires of trash were lit in several intersections around the city, and a public transit bus was torched. Windows of several businesses and vehicles were broken, including a news van.

Firefighters needed a police escort to douse a bonfire near the Giants' ball park. They also fought fires fueled by couches, news racks and other debris throughout the city.

Police said a damage report was not yet available.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced a ticker-tape parade would be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Market Street to Civic Center Plaza.

A parade after the Giants won the series in 2010 drew hundreds of thousands of fans.

After the game ended Sunday, fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merrymakers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.

In the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they had watched the game on a Jumbotron.

The thousands of fans assembled at the site exploded in a roar with the final out.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15, and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game. Strangers hugged strangers, and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes were shared freely despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Risk factors predict childhood obesity, researchers find

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? High birth weight, rapid weight gain and having an overweight mother who smokes can all increase the risk of a baby becoming obese later in childhood, research by experts at The University of Nottingham has found.

The study, published in the latest edition of the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, also discovered that children who were breastfed and were introduced to solid food later had a slightly reduced chance of becoming overweight.

The findings come following a systematic review and analysis of data from around 30 previous studies looking at the impact of factors affecting babies during the first 12 months of their lives and their potential link with childhood obesity.

The study was undertaken by PhD student Stephen Weng, supported by a team led by Dr Sarah Redsell in the University's School of Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy. The team also included Professor Cris Glazebrook and Professor Min Yang of the Institute of Mental Health, and Dr Judy Swift, School of Biosciences.

The first study of its kind to review all the evidence for risk factors in infancy associated with childhood obesity, it is hoped the findings will help to bridge the gap between research and the implementation of new clinical practice.

Dr Redsell said: "The results of this study effectively identify the most significant risk factors by analysing data from a large number of other studies that have previously been conducted. This will offer a robust starting point for further research that will identify the most appropriate ways in which this information could be useful in healthcare practice."

In the UK around one-quarter of children aged four to five years old and one-third of 10 to 11-year-olds are overweight and evidence suggests that children who are overweight at the age of five are more likely to be obese in adulthood.

Up to now, support from GPs and health visitors has centred on advice on healthy eating and breastfeeding but many practitioners believe more should be done to identify infants who are at risk of becoming obese at an earlier age.

The analysis of previous studies showed that:

  • Children of mothers who were overweight before pregnancy were 1.37 times more likely to be overweight at the age of three; 4.25 more likely to be overweight at the age of seven; and 2.36 times more likely to be overweight between the ages of nine and 14 years.
  • Six out of seven studies looking at infant birth weight showed a significant association between babies who were heavy at birth and obesity in later childhood.
  • Six studies investigating rapid weight gain in babies in their first year of life found strong links with obesity -- one study found that those babies in the top 20 per cent of monthly weight gain were 3.9 times more likely to be overweight at the age of four and a half years old.
  • Children with mothers who smoked during pregnancy were 47 per cent more likely to be overweight compared to the children of non-smoking mothers.
  • Children who were breastfed -- however briefly -- were 15 per cent less likely to become overweight in childhood compared to those children who were never breastfed.
  • There is some evidence that giving solid foods early can be linked to later obesity -- one study found that formula-fed babies given solid foods before four months were 6.3 times more likely to be overweight at three years of age than those where solid food was introduced between four and five months.
  • No compelling evidence to show a link between childhood obesity and maternal age or education at birth, maternal depression or ethnicity and inconclusive evidence for delivery type, weight gain in the womb, maternal weight loss after birth and 'fussy' infant temperament.

The research could be used to compile a 'checklist' for GPs and health visitors to help them spot infants most at risk of becoming obese later in life. However, researchers say more work is needed to study the practical and ethical considerations of such an intervention, including whether it would be accepted by parents and could feasibly be introduced in the current health service.

Any risk factor checklist, they say, would also require testing in the field and would need to be accompanied by clear clinical guidelines for healthcare practitioners.

The study was funded by NHS Nottinghamshire County PCT.

As crackdowns get tougher on alcohol, tobacco sales, and illicit drugs, there's a growing trend among youth to turn to another source to get high: their parent's medicine cabinet. A new University of Cincinnati study suggests adolescent males are at a higher risk of reporting longtime use of over-the-counter drugs, compared with their female peers. Early results of the study by Rebecca Vidourek, a UC assistant professor of health promotion, and Keith King, a University of Cincinnati professor of health promotion, will be presented on October 29, at the 140th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association in San Francisco.

The study examined over-the-counter (OTC) drug use among 7th-12th grade students in 133 schools across Greater Cincinnati. The data was collected by the Coalition for a Drug Free Greater Cincinnati as part of the 2009-2010 Pride Survey on adolescent drug use in America. The survey was distributed to more than 54,000 students.

Early analysis found that 10 percent of the students reported abusing over-the-counter drugs. "Findings from this study highlight and underscore OTC drugs as an increasing and significant health issue affecting young people," says Vidourek, who adds that commonly abused OTC medications include cough syrup containing Dextromethorphan (DXM), and decongestants. The researchers say that high rates of OTC use were also found among male and female junior high school students.

Vidourek says that OTC abuse can result in unintentional poisoning, seizures and physical and psychological addictions.

The researchers say that youth who reported involvement in positive activities, such as school clubs, sports, community and church organizations, were less likely to report abusing OTC medications. Teens more likely to report taking OTC drugs were also more likely to report that they had attended parties with the drugs or had friends who abused OTC drugs.

###

The Pride Survey is a national survey that provides an independent assessment of adolescent drug use, violence and other behaviors. The Coalition fora Drug-Free Greater Cincinnati promotes drug-free environments for youth by enhancing partnerships to educate, advocate and support locally-based, community mobilization.

Top tips for choosing a ski vacation rental ? Travel Insights 100

I?m a fan of staying in a condo or house when my family takes a ski vacation. Since skiing requires a lot of gear, a standard hotel room may feel like even more of a squeeze than usual. And there?s something really nice about hanging out in your long underwear after a long day spent wearing all those layers.

So what should you look for when choosing a place to say with your family on your next ski trip?

Proximity to the mountain. The closer you are to the slopes, the more time you can spend on them ? it?s as simple as that.? And if you?ve got younger kids who might not make it through an entire day of skiing, it?s nice to be able to easily duck back to your home base.

Skiing gates at Mad River Glen

A stocked kitchen. Although I certainly don?t cook all of our meals when we take a ski vacation, it?s nice to have the option of even throwing together some quick pizzas or spaghetti. And appliances like a toaster and coffee maker are key because eating breakfast in will certainly give you more time to ski and make it easier not to be late for ski school.

A washer and drier. Downhill skiing can be a surprisingly dirty and wet sport. My kids seem to find the mud puddles in the parking lot even when it?s really cold out. And nothing is worst first thing in the morning than discovering that the inside of your ski mittens are wet.

Equipment storage. It?s nice to have a ski locker or mudroom where you can stow all your gear so you don?t have a pile of wet skis and boots inside your living space. I also like to have lots of pegs where we can hang our coats and ski pants up.

Lobby at The Springs Keystone Resort, Colorado

Space to relax and play in. We?ve really enjoyed staying in condos where there?s some kind of communal area, either a pool, a fire pit, or a just a nice game room. Not only does this give you some room to move, it

A few other amenities that aren?t critical but are sure nice to have: Some board games and packs of cards just in case your kids are up for a family game night, a tub to soak sore muscles in, and covered parking so you don?t have to shovel out your car each morning.

What kind of accommodations do you look for when you?re taking a ski vacation with your kids?

If you like this post, you might enjoy all of my other Back to Ski posts, where I cover everything from top ski resorts for families to why I ski with my kids.

This post was written in conjunction with my relationship with Mountain Reservations as one of its Mountain Ambassadors.
