Zimbabwean journalists face increased intimidation

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? An independent Zimbabwean media rights group says journalists face increased intimidation, threats and assaults in their work as elections scheduled next year draw near.

A researcher for the Africa Media Barometer, Chris Mhike, said Friday that Zimbabwean journalists are "treading on dangerous grounds" by writing about President Robert Mugabe, the police, army and other individuals in power. Mhike was speaking at the launch of the barometer, a survey to monitor progress on media freedom which is sponsored by the Media Institute of Southern Africa.

Mhike said the majority of people in Zimbabwe still live in fear which is made worse by draconian laws that allow journalists and citizens to be arrested for the "flimsiest of reasons."

CSRC to relax rules on Chinese companies listing in Hong Kong

Caixin and other media report that the China Securities Regulatory Commission plans to drop its requirement that Chinese companies listing in Hong Kong meet certain size criteria: 400 million yuan in net assets, an offering size of US$50 million, and 60 million yuan in profits in the year before listing. This is in line with what I've heard is the CSRC's intention to move away from merit regulation and toward US-style disclosure regulation.

It's not clear to me why it was ever the CSRC's business to worry about overseas listings by Chinese companies. The shareholder-protection concerns are surely the business of the overseas jurisdictions, not China, and the foreign-ownership concerns, if any, would apply to all Chinese companies, not just ones with stock market listings, and so should be handled by the Ministry of Commerce. In any case, however, this is a step forward in Chinese business law and, I hope, another blow to the cult of bigness that dominates official thinking about corporate law.

It's also good news for the Chinese economy. To the extent that economic activity requires organizations like corporations to undertake it, anything that makes corporations run better is good for economic activity. And generally, flexibility in corporate organizational law is good. (I'll just leave it at that, since this is not the place for an extended discussion of the proper balance between mandatory and default rules in corporate law.) My pet theory of barriers to innovation in China is that problems with intellectual property law and enforcement are only part of the story. Another part is that problems with corporate organizational law - essentially, its rigidity, obsession with bigness, and supreme confidence that legislators know what's good for business better than business people do - prevent entrepreneurs from designing the type of business entity that can get their ideas funded. Thus, anything that removes barriers to small businesses getting funding - and lowering the threshold to listing in Hong Kong does that - is good.

I think it's problems in Chinese corporate law that explain why we still see round-tripping of investment (Chinese money going offshore and then returning to China dressed up as foreign investment) even though the regime of special preferences for foreign investors has more or less disappeared. People aren't going offshore to take advantage of tax preferences. They're going offshore to take advantage of foreign organizational law, which allows them to do things that Chinese corporate law doesn't. Think about the complex set of claims on a pre-IPO start-up in the US. To get funding from different kinds of people with different goals and different risk preferences, that company will probably have had to cook up different classes of preferred and common stock, with different conversion rights, rights to board seats, rights to profits, veto rights over particular corporate actions, etc. That kind of structuring is completely impossible under Chinese corporate law, which (for example) doesn't even provide for preferred stock.

Allowing smaller Chinese companies to list in Hong Kong does not, of course, reduce any of the rigidity problems in Chinese corporate law, but it's a step forward toward more flexibility in general.

Movado sets 75-cent special dividend, ups guidance

PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) ? Movado Group Inc. on Wednesday announced a special cash dividend, the latest in a string of companies to set one-time payments before the end of the year, and lifted its guidance for the year after a strong fiscal third quarter.

Shares rose $1.79, or 5.6 percent, to $34.02 in premarket trading.

The Paramus, N.J., company's special 75-cent dividend will be paid in December, as will its regular quarterly dividend of 5 cents.

Many companies are making special end-of-year dividend payments or moving up their quarterly payouts because investors may have to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in January.

Investors have paid a maximum 15 percent on dividends since 2003. But that rate will expire in January, rising to as much as 43.4 percent for the highest earners, unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a deal on taxes and government spending. Even if there is a compromise, there's no guarantee that the tax rate for dividends will remain at its current level.

Movado, which designs watches and runs stores in the U.S., also raised its adjusted profit guidance for the year ending in January to $1.50 per share from $1.40 per share. Analysts polled by FactSet predict earnings of $1.47 per share. The period includes the critical holiday shopping season.

The company still projects revenue of $510 million, in line with analyst expectations.

Net income in the August-October quarter more than doubled, to $34.5 million, or $1.34 per share, from $16.4 million, or 65 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.

The recent quarter's results included a $9.9 million tax benefit. Excluding that, the company said it posted an adjusted profit of 67 cents per share. Analysts expected a profit of 61 cents per share.

Revenue rose 12 percent to $160.2 million from $142.6 million.

Dr. Joseph Murray dies at 93; Nobel winner performed first kidney transplant

Since ancient times, surgeons have dreamed of transplanting healthy organs into patients disabled by disease and injury, but the human body's powerful immune system stymied all such attempts, leading many observers to conclude that the procedure was impossible.

But on Dec. 23, 1954, Dr. Joseph E. Murray of Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston removed a healthy kidney from 23-year-old Ronald Herrick and implanted it in his identical twin, Richard, who was dying of severe kidney disease. The successful procedure proved that organ transplants were possible and opened an era in which organ transplants are now routinely performed on tens of thousands of patients each year.

Murray was later the first to transplant kidneys between non-identical siblings and to use organs from cadavers. His feats won him the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, an award he shared with Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who performed the first bone-marrow transplant.

Murray died Monday at the hospital ? now known as Brigham and Women's Hospital ? where he performed his first transplant, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at his home on Thanksgiving Day. He was 93.

Murray received his first exposure to transplants during World War II while treating wounded soldiers at Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania. When patients did not have enough of their own skin for a graft, surgeons would transplant skin from other patients over the wounds. While these grafts would not survive for more than a few days, they would protect the wounds while they healed.

While preparing for surgeries with Col. James Barrett Brown, the chief of plastic surgery, Murray would often discuss the reasons for rejection. Brown thought that a close genetic relationship between the donor and the recipient would slow the rejection and he had, in fact, successfully grafted skin between identical twins in 1937. It was not until the 1950s and 1960s that biologists finally recognized that markers on the surface of cells called human leukocyte antigens, or HLAs, controlled the rejection process.

After the war, Murray began working with dogs in an attempt to perfect transplant techniques ? despite the scoffing of colleagues and a mentor's recommendation that he abandon the practice as a dead end. His research was considered "a fringe project," he wrote in his 2001 biography, "Surgery of the Soul."

In October 1954, the dying Herrick was referred to him for potential surgery. After much soul-searching and consultation with ethicists and religious leaders, Murray agreed. Although the hospital planned to keep the operation secret initially, news broke after Murray asked local police to check the fingerprints of the two brothers to ensure that they were twins.

Richard, who married one of his nurses at Brigham and had two children, fell victim to a recurrence of his kidney disease eight years later. Ronald survived until age 79.

The surgeon performed several more operations on identical twins, but recognized that this was a limited pool of recipients. His studies with dogs, however, showed that suppressing the patient's immune system with whole-body radiation could prolong survival, and in 1959 he began transplanting organs between fraternal twins. Success improved further when he added bone-marrow transplantation which, in effect, gave the recipient a new immune system compatible with the new organ.

One such patient lived for 29 more years.

These were drastic solutions, however, and would not work well for unrelated donors. The key to making transplants more accessible was the development of drugs that would suppress the immune system less drastically ? first azathioprine, then later cyclosporine and other drugs. In 1962, Murray and his team used such drugs to successfully implant a cadaver kidney from an unrelated donor into 23-year-old Mel Doucette.

In 1971, Murray retired as head of transplant surgery at Brigham and returned to his first love, plastic surgery. "At heart, I'm a reconstructive surgeon," he said at the time. His friend and colleague, the late Dr. Francis Moore, once noted that "Joe's the only guy who ever won a Nobel Prize for pursuing a hobby."

Murray used techniques originally developed by Dr. Paul Tessier of France to correct facial deformities by repositioning and moving forward the bones of the head and face. He traveled around the world to treat adults and children with severe facial deformities resulting from accidents, congenital conditions, cancer surgeries and other problems.

One of his best-known patients was Raymond Francis MacMillan, who suffered from Moebius syndrome ? a congenital condition involving severe heart and facial deformities. As a child, MacMillan was delivered to a mental institution because his parents could not deal with the condition.

When MacMillan was released at age 21, he was referred to Murray, who performed a series of surgeries that, among other things, repositioned the jaw so he could swallow normally, control saliva and smile. His appearance could not be made totally normal, but the surgery allowed him to function in the world and, Murray wrote, allowed "his inner self to grow and glow."

Joseph Edward Murray was born April 1, 1919, in Milford, Mass., about 30 miles southwest of Boston. From his earliest memory, he wrote in his Nobel biography, "I wanted to be a surgeon, possibly influenced by the qualities of our family doctor who cared for our childhood ailments."

He enrolled at the College of the Holy Cross, concentrating on Latin, Greek, English and philosophy, "assuming I'd receive ample science in medical school." He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1943 and served in the Army until 1947. He spent his entire career at Brigham.

In 1986, Murray suffered a stroke. Although he recovered quickly and was cleared to return to the operating room, he decided to retire and "just enjoy the other aspects of my life," he said at the time.

Murray is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Virginia "Bobby" Link; three sons, three daughters and 18 grandchildren.

Bridgewater celebrates new $113,000 water sports platform

More people in the Loddon Murray District will be getting more active, more often, following today?s official opening of the new $113,000 Bridgewater Water Sports Platform in Bridgewater by Member for Northern Victoria, Damian Drum.

Representing the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty, Mr Drum joined water-skiers from the Bridgewater Ski Club to launch the new platform featuring ramps that provide easier access for people of all abilities to take part in water sports on the popular Loddon River.

?Local sport plays an important role in not only bringing people together, which is why we?re working hard to deliver great facilities so more residents can participate in the sports they love,? Mr Drum said.

?Having quality accessible sports facilities is central to encouraging more Victorians to get more active, more often, which is a top priority for this Government.

?That?s why we were proud to invest just over $59,000 in the Bridgewater Water Sports Platform from the 2010/2011 Community Facility Funding Program.

?Our investment ensures local water venues like the Loddon River continue to be an important community asset that everyone can enjoy for many years to come,? he said.

Mr Drum said the new facility compliments the town?s fishing pier, swimming jetty and walking tracks and provides an important base for the club to expand local water ski and wake board development programs to include more people.

?With over 500 people expected to use this platform over the summer months, the facility is set to become a focal point for the town?s water sports,? Mr Drum said.

?I?d like to thank Loddon Shire Council for contributing just over $14,000 and the Federal Government for its $40,000 contribution towards the project.

?This has been a team effort and it?s fantastic to see this important project come to fruition.

?The project was a result of listening to local people and working collaboratively with each of our project partners,? he said.

Cutting real Christmas trees less environmentally harmful than using an artificial one for six years, biologists say

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Given recent extreme weather events -- the summer's brutal heat and subsequent drought, followed by Superstorm Sandy's disastrous path -- newly green-conscious consumers may be wondering how to lessen their carbon footprint this holiday season. Plant biologist Clint Springer, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, says that buying a real Christmas tree may not solve the world's climate ills, but it is better than using an artificial one for a few years and tossing it.

"At this time of year, choosing a real Christmas tree is one way that an average person can make a difference in terms of climate change," Springer says. "A study as recent as 2009 (Ellipsos) concluded that a 7-foot cut tree's impact on climate is 60 percent less than a 7-foot artificial tree used for six years. So while cut trees are not carbon-neutral, in terms of carbon-use, they are better than artificial trees."

Springer acknowledges that many families choose artificial trees because they may not have easy access to real trees, they may be too costly, or because they have tree allergies.

"Ultimately, people need to make the choice that makes the most sense for their family, but they should keep in mind that real Christmas trees do not trigger allergic reactions," Springer says. "Farm-raised trees are too young to be reproductive in most cases, so pollen is not an issue. It's possible, though, that some people might be sensitive to the natural scent of the trees." In that case, Springer recommends choosing pines over firs, which usually carry a weaker scent.

But the question remains for some: Do live Christmas trees bring mold into the home? "From what we know about household allergens like mold spores, a house with a real tree does not usually show a higher rate of indoor air pollution than a house with an artificial tree, because mold spores found on live trees do not usually become air-borne." (Wyse and Malloch, 1970.)

If buying a real tree is not an option, Springer says there are other ways for consumers to green their holiday celebrations.

? Consider using LED lights. A typical 50-light strand of C7 bulbs, often used for outdoor lighting, uses approximately 99 percent more energy than an LED strand of the same number of lights.

? Buy local and sustainably farmed produce for holiday gatherings. This lessens the use of fossil fuels for transportation, cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions, a major contributor to global climate change.

? Buy organic produce. Though pricey for some families, buying organic produce is an even better choice for party season. Organic food is not farmed with artificial fertilizers, which require a tremendous amount of fossil fuels to produce.

? Recycle whenever possible. Consider using wrapping paper or boxes made from recycled material and be sure to recycle them once the gift giving is over.

Berlin Summer School | fass news

by fasswebmaster.

By Dina Marie Delias (Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology), Department of Sociology

The Berlin Summer School is an intensive two-week program organised by the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) at the Humboldt- Universitat zu Berlin and the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB). It is intended to be a venue for discussion between and among young and senior scholars, so the former can develop an even deeper understanding of the linkage of theory and empirical research. It?s pretty selective in choosing participants, and they look for research topics that can fall under the themes of Democracy and Democratisation, Social Inequality and Welfare, Civil Society, and Politics, Economy and Society in a Globalising World.

In this year?s summer school (July 15 ? 27, 2012), there was a mix of big lectures, small group discussions, one-on-one consultations with senior professors, poster presentations and dialogues between the 30 participants from universities around the world. The first week involved lectures and/or debates between senior academics including Donatella della Porta and Ronald Inglehart on ?Concepts as Building Blocks of Theory?, Peter Bearman and Craig Calhoun on ?Linking Micro- and Macro- Perspectives?, Delia Baldassari and Henry Bradly on ?Causation and Explanation in the Social Sciences?, Mark Bevir on ?Epistemological Implications of Methodological Paradigms?, and the insightful keynote- lecture from Prof.Dr.rer.soc. Klaus Eder. These were apart from the more intensive theme-based lectures and small- group discussions on the second week. The program made sure that each of the participants would have the chance not only to talk about their research but also receive substantial feedback.

It was also a great bonus that the Summer School was in Berlin where you are surrounded by so much history that reminds you of the best and the worst that humanity can do. After the hard work put into the presentations and discussions, participants would be hard-pressed in choosing where to visit in order to know the city and its stories further, or to just sit back and take a break.

Self Empowerment and Self Growth through the power of belief | Self ...

Sleep in the Mojave Desert (Sylvia Plath)

Out here there are no hearthstones,
Hot grains, simply. It is dry, dry.
And the air dangerous. Noonday acts queerly
On the mind's eye erecting a line
Of poplars in the middle distance, the only
Object beside the mad, straight road
One can remember men and houses by.
A cool wind should inhabit these leaves
And a dew collect on them, dearer than money,
In the blue hour before sunup.
Yet they recede, untouchable as tomorrow,
Or those glittery fictions of spilt water
That glide ahead of the very thirsty.

I think of the lizards airing their tongues
In the crevice of an extremely small shadow
And the toad guarding his heart's droplet.
The desert is white as a blind man's eye,
Comfortless as salt. Snake and bird
Doze behind the old maskss of fury.
We swelter like firedogs in the wind.
The sun puts its cinder out. Where we lie
The heat-cracked crickets congregate
In their black armorplate and cry.
The day-moon lights up like a sorry mother,
And the crickets come creeping into our hair
To fiddle the short night away.

Garrison claims second consecutive singles racquetball trophy ...

Robert Moore, 795th MP Bn., right, hits the ball back to his Garrison Command opponent, Anthony Powers, on Court 3 in the championship round of the Commanders Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament Nov. 8 at DFC.

Garrison Command successfully defended its title as the post?s reigning racquetball champions, earning their second consecutive Commander?s Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament trophy Nov. 8 at Davidson Fitness Center.
The Garrison team of Anthony Powers, Dave Faulkner and Renard Ellis overwhelmed the competition from their first game in the second round of the four-day tourney (they earned a bye in Round 1), allowing no more than nine points from any opponent in games played to 15.

?It?s just looking for different styles, trying to play your game and not deviating too much from your game plan,? Powers said. ?There are always new players coming on, so you never know what to expect when you walk in there. You have to give your best and scope out the competition as you get close to the final to see what their strengths and weaknesses are, just like they are (doing to) you.?

Image

From left, Garrison Command player Renard Ellis is congratulated by Danny Howell, FMWR sports specialist, as his teammates Anthony Powers and Dave Faulkner look on.

The 795th Military Police Battalion team of Robert Moore, Aaron Poulin and Mike Lynch were the tournament runners-up, fighting their way past the 169th Engineer Battalion, the two-time runners-up Dental Activity team and the 35th Engineer Battalion to advance to the final.

?We took second ? that?s not too bad,? Poulin said to his teammates as the tournament drew to a close.

In the championship round, Ellis was the first Garrison player to emerge victorious, exiting Court 3 with a 15-9, 15-2 win over Lynch. Faulkner assured Garrison would take home the trophy win with a 15-2, 15-5 win over Poulin on Court 2. Powers then gave his team the sweep, defeating Moore, 15-1, 15-2.

The 92nd Military Police Battalion team of Jim ?Doc? Blair, Damien Bangle and Brian Moreno finished third in the tournament, defeating the 35th Engr. Bn. in the third-place round.

?We had a good solid team. We came in without a lot of practice or a lot of notice, but we were able to pull some wins out,? Blair said.

Blair expressed the players? appreciation for the quality of the tournament and the sports programs hosted by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

?This year?s tournament was great. (FMWR sports specialist) Danny (Howell) and the gang always put on a good show for us,? Blair said.

Bangle said the tournament represented not only a chance to represent his unit, but also an opportunity to meet other players.

?A lot of these guys, you might not have even bumped into before the tournament, but I?ve had a chance to make a couple of friends here ? the guy I just played, we?ll probably play each other again, just because we know it?s a challenge,? Bangle said.

Powers and Faulkner, who were also last year?s doubles racquetball champs, play on a regular basis at DFC. Powers said he hopes to bring more players to the courts.

?One thing I wanted to do this year more than any other is to try and be an ambassador for the sport and try to get more new players interested in racquetball,? Powers said. ?You don?t want to wait an entire year between Commander?s Cup tournaments to play. So, I hope we?ll see some new faces and be able to get new players some more experience.?

?This game is a blast. The rules are simple to learn, but it will take you years to master ? there?s always a new complexity or wrinkle to unravel,? he added.

Need To Find Auto Insurance? These Tips Can Help! | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Auto insurance policies are rife with jargon and complex phraseology. This can make it very confusing. You will be able to understand these terms better after you read this article. Understanding what the terms really mean can help you to make more informed decisions about your auto insurance.

You should understand what kind of coverage you have on your policy if something ever happens. This kind of coverage usually includes medical expenses, but may cover other things as well. However, optional coverages like collision or comprehensive may not be on your policy unless you specifically request them. It is important to see what types are covered with your insurance policy to ensure that it is enough for everything you?ll need it for.

Consider paying the entire annual cost of your insurance at one time. This will save you a service fee that many insurance companies add when you make your payment monthly. Save some money and give the payment all at one time.

TIP! Keep on file all records of all insurance bills you paid. You?ll need your records for proof of payment should there ever be an issue with the insurance company.

Insurance rates are an important factor to take into consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. When you buy a safe car you will be more reputable. Many sports cars are not favored by insurance companies. Remember to include this expense when buying a new car.

Those who do not drive a lot, or who drive short distances, can sometimes get low mileage discounts on their policy. Oftentimes, you will have to drive less than 7,500 miles in a year to avail yourself of this discount. They also have commuter discounts you can look at if you take public transportation to work.

A great way to lower your auto insurance rates is to install a car alarm, a tracker or an immobilizer. Your insurance coverage will also rely upon the theft associated with the model of your car. The more secure your vehicle is from theft, the lower the cost of your insurance will be.

TIP! Learn your state law and regulations in regards to auto insurance. It will also help you to decide on what options you may need to add to your policy, as some states will not require certain coverage.

Know the facts before you let insurance costs deter you from buying the sports car of your dreams. Some of them, in fact, do not. It might be worth calling the insurance agent to see what the insurance costs are for a particular vehicle.

You need to maintain a clean license. If accidents or tickets appear on your driving record, they may lead to your insurance rates going up. If you have had tickets or gotten in accidents in the past, going to driving school may help to lower your insurance rate.

TIP! There are lots of factors that determine the rates you will pay for car insurance. Some of these criteria include whether you are married, how old you are and your gender.

Leave more money in your pocket by choosing a higher deductible. While this means more money spent up front if you are have an accident, it will save money on your premium. In order to make this strategy work, you should set aside enough money for the deductible in case of an accident. If your deductible is low, your insurance premiums will be as well.

Once a family member buys his or her own insurance, make sure to take him or her off of your policy. This will reduce the amount of money you must pay in premiums. If you covered your children on your own policy while they were teenagers, which is a wise idea, your insurance costs will drop when they buy their own policies and get off of yours. Sometimes you will be able to save by reducing the multiple drivers listed on your policy, if you take some off it will save you money.

Make sure you know what coverage types are important when choosing auto insurance. While there are a lot of options available to you, not all of them will make sense. Conversely, if you?ve historically had small accidents, it is probably in your best interest to pay the extra to ensure collisions are covered.

TIP! If you sell a vehicle, or no longer own it for whatever reason, have it dropped it from your insurance policy that same day. Keeping insurance on a car you no longer own can cost you a significant amount of money.

When purchasing car insurance, get quotes from multiple carriers. Rates can be very different depending on which company you choose. An annual review of your policy and its premium price against comparative firms is important to ensure that you are always paying the best price available. Being sure that the coverage is the same between the quotes that you are comparing.

Getting Into Fantasy Sports Is Fun And Easy

Nothing is more thrilling than professional sports when a player dunks a ball, scores a touchdown, kicks a field goal, or scores a game-winning goal. When all the joy and jubilation settles, you crack open your dusty high school yearbook and relive all those memories of when you lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. That's when you realize that you miss the thrill of competition. There's nothing like getting those competitive juices flowing when you're on the verge of dominating your opponent, but there's only one problem. Its been years since you've competed in athletics and you're no longer in game shape.

Since you can no longer turn back the clock to your days of athletic excellence, you can still satisfy your craving for competition. Play in fantasy sports leagues and destroy your competition, or play for fun. There are a number of viable options available, and a number of leagues at various levels of competition. Some leagues take a more casual approach in competing with other players, and some leagues are filled with players who like to kick butt.

You also have a variety of leagues to choose from based on length. If you're a purist, you can choose to participate in a season-long league. In choosing this option, you must stay abreast of what's going on in the sports world. Stay up to date on who's injured, who's underperforming, and base your roster decisions on the day to day changes happening the sports world as they relate to the players on your roster. You must also make adjustments to your roster frequently. Too many fantasy players lose head to head matches because they forgot to log in to substitute players that aren't playing due to injury, bye weeks or off days.

If you decide to participate in fantasy sports, but find yourself in the middle of a professional sports season then you have the option of participating in a daily or weekly league. Weekly and daily leagues are totally different animals from the season-long leagues. You must stay abreast of the current trends in your sports league. In order to win weekly and daily leagues, you must know which players are hot and likely to perform well for the day or week of competition. While one person may be the best basketball player in the NBA, but it does you no good to start him in a daily or weekly league when he has an injury that's likely to keep him from playing for two weeks. The same can be said for slumping players. Its best to start players who are on hot streaks.

There are plenty of leagues available for both free and money play. Which do you choose? That's a matter of personal preference. Free leagues are fun as well a money leagues. There are also leagues available that offer freerolls where you can win prize money depending on your performance in fantasy. If you decide to play for money, there are a number of leagues available at a variety of buy in levels. Whichever league you choose, fantasy sports are a great way to engage in competition and have fun without having to worry about attending practices and workouts.

Kobo Mini

Sometimes smaller can be better?even when it comes to reading. The tiny Kobo Mini ($79 direct) is one of the smallest?ebook readers we've tested. But the size is deceptive, as it still packs a 5-inch E Ink screen, which is just an inch less than you'll find on the average Kindle or Nook. And unlike Sony's now-discontinued 5-inch Reader, the Kobo Mini supports touch.?If an ebook reader could be called "cute," it's certainly this one. That said, you're not really saving any money by going with the smaller screen size. If a diminutive reader appeals to you, the Kobo Mini is worth getting, but a number of flaws dampen our enthusiasm about it. The base Amazon Kindle costs $10 less and is our Editors' Choice for entry-level ebook readers, thanks to its superior contrast and faster page turns.

Design and Reading
The Kobo Mini measures just 5.2 by 4 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.7 ounces. The size is the biggest reason why you'd buy the Mini?or why you'd avoid it, for that matter. It's smaller than a paperback, and barely bigger than the 4.5-inch-plus screens that come on many of today's smartphones, although smartphone owners probably aren't the Mini's main target market.

The top edge contains a sliding power switch, while the bottom edge houses the micro USB charger port. It's covered in a grippy, soft touch material that's similar to what Barnes & Noble uses. You can get a Mini in black or white.?Unfortunately, the Mini loses the Kobo Glo's memory card slot.?There's 2GB of internal storage?still good for roughly 1,000 books?which should be plenty for most people. It limits your sideloading and PDF storage options, though.

The 5-inch touch screen offers 16 shades of gray, but the smaller panel isn't the whole story. Instead of E Ink Pearl, the Mini uses an older Vizplex V110 panel with noticeably poorer contrast. Worse, the Freescale 508 800MHz processor is a step down from the 1GHz CPU in the Glo?and the lost 200MHz turn out to be really important. The Kobo Mini feels sluggish, and takes roughly twice as long to turn a page as the Kobo Glo does.

The Mini also has the same problem as the Glo, in that not every screen touch registers unless you're quite deliberate about it. Thankfully, it also doesn't black the screen out completely with each page turn, so Kobo is still using the same caching engine here.

Still, while much of the above sounds bad on paper, it's mostly in comparison to newer models. You get seven fonts in 24 different sizes, plus adjustable weight and sharpness settings, so you can customize the reading experience pretty heavily. Despite fiddling with these settings?some are tucked under an Advanced menu within the Font Setting page?I couldn't get text to look quite as clear or crisp as on the base Amazon Kindle. The Mini was still fine for normal reading, though.

Other Features, Store, and Conclusions
While reading, you can highlight text, look up words in the built-in dictionary, and share passages on Facebook or Twitter directly from the device. The Mini also comes with Reading Life, which tracks your reading speed and lets you score achievements, which, to me, seems a bit silly. Kobo claims the battery lasts for roughly one month of reading on a single charge with Wi-Fi turned off.

The Kobo Mini connects to the Internet via 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz networks only. Kobo's online store has over 2.5 million books, and most are priced similarly to Amazon or Barnes & Noble's selections. You get ePub, PDF, and TXT file support, but not MOBI; either way, ePub support is the most important, as it opens up access to public library lending and a host of download sites you can't access with a Kindle. You can buy books on the Kobo Mini, but as with the Kobo Glo, it's a lot easier to shop on the desktop website.

If the size of the Kobo Mini speaks to you, it's probably still worth getting, but it's not where the state of the art is?even in the same price range. Our current entry-level Editors' Choice is the latest version of the base Amazon Kindle, which costs either $69 or $89, depending on whether the Special Offers bother you enough to spend the extra $20. (They certainly bother me enough.) That Kindle lacks a touch screen, although it's a standard 6-inch E Ink display instead of the Kobo Mini's 5-inch version. The Kindle also has no memory card slot or ePub compatibility, but it has significantly better contrast and faster page refreshes. Finally, the base Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch costs $20 more; it's the next least expensive touch-screen reader after the Kobo Mini, and gives you a larger touch screen with better contrast and a memory card slot.

Pushing for change, some in Jordan point to king

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? It's usually a few younger protesters who break out in the chant ? startling and almost unheard of in this country where the monarchy has always been almost sacrosanct ? "Down, down with the king."

The rest of the opposition, including its biggest and most powerful faction, the Muslim Brotherhood, are quick to make clear they don't demand the ouster of Jordan's King Abdullah II. But after the past week's angry protests sparked by a government hike in gas and fuel prices, they warn that this usually placid U.S. ally will be thrown into turmoil unless the king allows change.

The unusually violent protests have shifted the focus of discontent from the government, at which anger was focused in the past, squarely on Abdullah for the first time. As a result, the monarch faces the biggest test yet of his democratic reform program, which his critics say does not do enough to end his monopoly on power. Anger over the price hikes has given the opposition, led by the Brotherhood, a rallying point to push him for more dramatic moves.

At the heart of the political standoff is a half-British king trying to forestall Arab Spring-style uprisings that have toppled autocratic regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Libya and led to the civil war in Syria. A darling of the United States and other Western governments who celebrate him and his beautiful Palestinian wife as modern celebrity-monarchs, the king still sits at the helm of a sprawling and largely feared intelligence service, a carefully lubricated patronage system and a U.S.-trained military.

His moribund economy is largely dependent on aid from Washington, Saudi Arabia and other oil-producing Arab states. Government opponents say their phones are bugged and homes watched. At times, such as during the 2010 parliamentary elections, his government was accused of blatantly rigging the vote.

"We're not calling for the king's ouster, but for him to listen to the people's demands and embark on real and serious reforms," Zaki Bani Irsheid, a leading figure in the Islamic Action Group, the political arm of the Brotherhood, told a press conference Monday.

"We did not raise the slogan of toppling the king, but it is being called for by some in street protests, a precedent which indicates that popular tension is growing and an explosion is looming."

The Islamic Action Front now heads a newly created coalition of the fragmented opposition groups. But its control is loose, and the coalition uncomfortably brings together a wide ideological spectrum, from Islamists to Arab nationalists to communists.

Around 400 demonstrators protested Monday in front of the prime minister's office, blocking the road in a traffic circle and demanding the reversal of the fuel and gas price hikes. A few young secular activists in the crowd chanted "down, down with the king" and "Abdullah, you either reform or go."

Calls for the king's ouster reflect "the anger over the price hikes, which dealt a serious blow to the vast majority of Jordanians, whose per capital income is $3,000," said Khaled Ramadan, a prominent activist representing Arab nationalists.

"But in a broader perspective, the tension started building up over the snail-pace of reforms, with no visible sign that the government and its security apparatus, which maintains the upper hand, are taking a step back," he said.

University senior Sohaib Breizat, 21, member of the largely secular Hirak movement comprising young Jordanians, said, "We want a total hands-off for Jordanian security in our daily lives."

"Why do Jordanians need certificates of good conduct from Jordanian intelligence when they apply for government jobs or drivers' license?" he asked. "We keep asking for more freedoms, but we get less. It seems our calls are falling on deaf ears."

Hirak surfaced in the wake of the Arab Spring through Internet social networking.

"We want justice and equality, better opportunities for everyone, including women, jobs for college graduates, respect for our right to free speech, opinion, union and assembly without security interference or intimidation," said a Hirak spokesman, Suhaib Assaf. "We want government transparency and a serious clampdown on corruption, as well as an end to nepotism and bureaucracy."

Jordan has some of the aspects of a police state ? the often-thuggish secret police; the manipulated elections; the fawning royal stories in the government media; the hundreds of billboards with the king's face gazing upon his subjects.

However, the reality is complicated. It's illegal to criticize the king here, but prosecutions are rare and those convicted often get royal pardons. The secret police are feared, but are not a constant, threatening presence as in Syria. If some politicians say their phones are tapped, even the harshest critics speak fairly openly.

Abdullah has faced little public criticism at home since he ascended to the throne in 1999. After the Arab Spring's eruption in late 2010, Jordan has seen frequent but small protests.

Then, last Tuesday, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour hiked the prices of cooking and heating gas by 54 percent and some oil derivatives by up to 28 percent, saying that was necessary to reduce a record budget deficit and growing foreign debt and tackle high unemployment, poverty and waves of Syrian refugees, who are straining meager resources. He said the move was part of Jordan's efforts to secure a badly needed $2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund to shore up the kingdom's shaky finances amid a shortfall of Arab donations this year.

The protest backlash was unusually violent, with one person killed and 75 others, including 58 policemen, injured. There was also a change in tone, as angry protesters blamed Abdullah for the price rise, accusing him of supporting state corruption by allegedly pocketing state money to spend on personal pleasures.

It was a rare departure from the norm of revering Abdullah's Hashemite dynasty. Its line of descent from the Prophet Muhammad, combined with the elaborate system of patronage aimed at powerful local leaders, has earned the family immense loyalty among the Bedouin tribes who make up the traditional core of Jordanian society.

Protests have dwindled to a handful per day this week, and violence has waned. But the opposition has vowed to continue until the price hikes are revoked.

The protesters also want broader political gains.

The Islamic Action Front's leader, Hamza Mansour, said as a first step, the king must dismiss Ensour and "form a national salvation government that would include Islamists and other opposition figures to change controversial legislation, like the election law, and help parliament regain its independence so that it can impartially monitor the government and official corruption."

So far, Abdullah has maintained control, partly by relinquishing some of his absolute powers to parliament. His reform roadmap envisions parliamentary elections slated for Jan. 23 as a vehicle toward having an elected prime minister for the first time in the country's history. Previously, it was the king's prerogative to appoint the premier.

He also changed 42 articles, or one-third of Jordan's 60-year-old constitution, to ensure an end to government manipulation over parliament. He created a constitutional court to monitor the application of the law. Other new laws encourage a multiparty system, allow Jordanians to elect mayors and city councils and lift restrictions on rallies and public gatherings.

Abdullah also changed the election law. But the Brotherhood responded by announcing a boycott of the upcoming election, saying the legislation favors locally-based conservative candidates rather than parties with an ideological base. The government said it has adopted a globally recognized system of elections, and that the Islamists' alternative would inflate their own representation.

Information Minister Sameeh Maaytah said the groundwork was laid for reform, but that "change can't happen overnight."

"We have a nascent multiparty system that must be nurtured so that it would mature and be able to contest future elections based on party banners," he said. "We can't leave any unfilled vacuum because the alternative would be a total mess."

Video: What Mid-East violence means for Obama

>> wrote that this crisis could become a giant political hot potato for the president. we will talk more about that. so the president has kept a close eye on this situation while he's been on that visit through asia, making repeated calls to benjamin netanyahu , the israeli prime minister and keeping close contact with the egyptian president , morsi, who is overseeing some type of cease-fire and now we know that hillary clinton is being dispatched to the region. for the president, how important of a diplomatic crisis is this to come out looking as if the u.s. was able to broker and help with the cease-fire of what we have been watching over the last week?

>> it's kind of a necessary role for the united states where it's trying to figure out the new geopolitical landscape. how is iran factoring into hamas? with the israeli elections about to happen, you know, what is the new and post- u.s. election what is the new geopolitical landscape. so the united states really cannot afford to have another hot bed, potential big, big problem on its hands again in the middle east with israeli/palestinian relationship. so, you know, the united states has to play a crucial role. the president understands that. and that's why you see secretary of state clinton there.

>> the money that the u.s. promises in aid to egypt , $2 billion is that enough leverage to be able to keep mohamed morsi overseeing this process and peace in the region, continuing not only to be a partner to the u.s., but once again considered an ally?

>> well, we have seen a difference between the public rhetoric of morsi and the muslim brotherhood run government in egypt and what it knows behind the scenes , what's known on the behind the scenes , egypt being a key player in trying to negotiate at least a cease-fire in the region. because they know that they have the -- the big card it does have is that billion-plus dollars in aid that goes -- that goes to egypt . now, the u.s. still has a close relationship with the egyptian military and that's why you see, you know, morsi having to play his own political game to try to figure out what kind of role he can play, keep the u.s. at least if not happy, pacified. and not see this thing blow up on its watch.

>> thank you, sir.

From the rolling meadows to the big sky, Texas has a little something for everyone. Plus there?s nothing like the sound of an LS engine being put through its paces, and we get to experience some of that gorgeous Texas countryside in the process.? The Black Crowes? ?No Speak, No Slave? is well-chosen to complement the vid ? check it out.

According to the owner, OVRKL has an MTI X1 cam, Kooks 1 7/8? headers, and B&B bullet exhaust which we get to experience up close and personal ? the sound is nice and crisp without an obnoxious tone. There are a number of other custom touches done on the car as well, all of which add up to one of the cleanest Z06?s on the planet from what we can see.? The fact that this car appears to be driven regularly, yet looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor should be an inspiration to us all to use that clay bar and wax more often. Isn?t that what we always tell the ladies?
