SRINAGAR, May 26: People in Kashmir can soon liven themselves by keeping coloured fish as pets at their homes.
The Fisheries Department of Jammu and Kashmir will shortly be releasing 8,000 seeds of coloured fish varieties in the market.
?Around 8000 seeds of many coloured strains of fish have been developed by the department which will be made available in the market,? an official spokesman said after a meeting chaired by state Fisheries Minister Ajaz Ahmad Khan here in Srinagar.
The coloured fish varieties are expected to be a hit in Kashmir in view of an increasing interest among people who now plan ponds and aquaria at their homes.
The marketing of coloured fish varieties will add another feather in the cap of the department which has won accolades for successful trout farming in the valley.
Addressing the meeting, the minister asked all district heads to take up the vacation of security forces from their premises with respective Deputy Commissioners.
Khan also asked the Director Fisheries to take up the matter of withdrawal of security forces from fisheries department complexes with Divisional Commissioners as well.
The Minister stressed on giving backyard fisheries a thrust in view of the interest it has generated among people who now plan ponds and aquaria at their houses.
Khan also reviewed the status of fish reservoirs at Salal, Baglihar, Uri and other dams and asked the officers to tap the potential of high altitude lakes which are ideal for trout production, the spokesman said.
