The Detroit Lions are projected to go with a defensive end in SB Nation's latest 2013 NFL mock draft, but are any of the DEs really worth the fifth overall pick?
SB Nation's latest 2013 NFL mock draft has the Detroit Lions going with Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore. This has been a popular pick for the Lions since mock drafts really got rolling after the 2012 season because it makes so much sense. The Lions need help at defensive end, and Moore is considered one of the top DEs in this year's draft.
The big question surrounding this position right now is as follows: Are any of the defensive ends in the 2013 NFL Draft really worth the No. 5 overall pick? I hinted at this earlier with our poll on whether the Lions should go with a defensive end or an offensive tackle with the fifth overall pick. While the Lions may need a defensive end, the reality is that there may not be any worth taking at No. 5. Don't believe me? Just ask NFL Network's Mike Mayock:
Mayock is down on the defensive ends that are projected to go early on, which isn't good to hear considering the Lions could very well end up taking Moore or Werner. Mayock actually thinks the top players in the draft are Alabama offensive guard Chance Warmack, North Carolina offensive guard Jonathan Cooper, Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel and Central Michigan offensive tackle Eric Fisher. He's clearly higher on the offensive linemen than defensive ends, and I will be interested to see how this plays out in the coming months before the draft. Will we see more mock drafts with the Lions taking an offensive lineman, or will defensive end continue to be the most popular pick?
